Any tips on how to make my tank look nicer?

i will j0ker. im going to the lfs tomorrow; if a background isnt too expensive ill pick one up (if its too much ill go online). i think anything over 5 dollars would be a waste of money probably. I also convinced my sister to buy me a cichlid after i let her hand feed them and they nipped at her fingers :P
 
You can also just purchase a black background from Petsmart, etc for really cheap. I did this on one of my smaller tanks...cost like $5 and was quick and easy.

if driftwood is soaked for a week submerged with waterchanges in the container, will the wood lose its pH dropping properties?

I have drift wood and plants in a few cichlid tanks and can't get the ph below 8 if I tried, then again our tap is almost 9.
 
they wanted 16 dollars for the 55 gal background. no WAY. i saw some on ebay for 5 but i wont order until im done stocking. 6 fish out of 10.
