Anybody else have adult Electric Blue/Gold ("Platinum") Dempseys?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very cool fish and nice job raising them. I was looking to get an ebjd but those plantums look awesome. Possibly interested when your ready to sell.

Hello
liquidlizard , I'm sorry to say (NO) I don't have any adult Electric Blue/Gold ("Platinum") Dempseys.
But I do have some adult Blue/Gold Genes that are pairing up right now & first spawn hatched Feb. 2, 2012.
Before I continue I want to give credit to Aquatic Aggression for pointing out this thread to me on a thread
I opened recently (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?462839-Green-Jack-Dempsey-Project)

I've known about the blue/gold JD's for a while & started a breeding project to create some of my own. I have taken on this project with my friend (Greg) that introduced me to the idea. This breeding project requires a lot of patience & knowledge of the JD genes (Dominant & Recessive). I'm @ the end stage of the breeding project now & can tell you that the fish are beautiful even @ 4weeks old. I call them Green JD's as you call them platinums.

I'm very interested in reading about how you put the genes together for your Green JD's / Platinum JD's.

Just posted up my oddball JDs on aquabid, one is a blue gold oddball morph and the other two are EBJD oddball morphs.

I think that it's weird that you would put bad genetic forms of these for SALE, not to mention the price is crudely high for BAD FISH that should be disposed of. If you want to sell the blue/gold do it the right way & sell quality fish, not deformed fish that you should dispose of yourself.

Thank You

Jill

Hi Jill,
Congrats on your success with your Green Dempsey project. I look forward to seeing your progress as they grow. Maybe eventually we can swap some fry to diversify bloodlines :)

As to how I put the genes together, I originally started off with an adult pair of blue gene/gold genes (which of course were the offspring of ebjd x gold) and a single platinum fry from a different pairing. The adult bggg produced the female which is now the mother of my platinum fry. She is a gold that has proven to carry the blue gene. When paired with my platinum male, they produce about 50% platinum fry and 50% gold blue genes.
I really enjoy working with genetics and selective breeding. I used to breed different color morphs of various species of reptiles, and that has now carried over into fish.

I think it is fun breeding for certain traits as well. Having a pair of fish throwing 3 or 4 different types of fry is really neat.

Very nice. Keep sending updates. I just reviewed and replied to Jillfishie's post on her Dempsey project. I think that what you both are doing is simply fascinating. I look forward to seeing more updates.

Very nice, I look forward to reading updates on your babies. Mine are just now starting to show patterns, but unlike you I got more than just Golds, platinums/Greens & gene carriers. I also got ebjd's with my spawn. I will also do like you have and create a new green gen by selective breeding.

Keep up the good work & (YES) anytime you want to trade fry to diversify yours/mine will be fine by me. ;);)

Thank You

Jill:)

Thanks Jill, sounds like a plan on trading bloodlines :)
In my original spawn of bggg x bggg, I did end up with all 4 phenotypes of fry. But crossing the platinum male to the gold female with blue gene, that limits the fry to just 2 types: golds carrying the blue gene, and the platinums. I also have unrelated EBJD fry which carry the gold gene...if I get one of those to pair up with a platinum, the resulting fry will be 50% EBJD and 50% platinum :)
It still remains to be seen if 2 platinums can breed and produce viable fry. I think there is a good chance, seeing as how they are much faster growing and stronger than my EBJD fry...seems that the added gold trait strengthens them somehow. You'll have to let me know if you have the same results in your fry as they grow.
I am glad to have found someone else working with this cross to compare notes with :)
