Anybody have a freshwater saw fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That really sucks man! I'm sorry that happened to you. It would have been amazing to see someone on here with one and you are one of the few people that would have no problem whatsoever caring for it.

No. The stipulation of the sale was no arrival guarantee. The loss wasn't the seller's fault. The airline cut the power cord to the shipping bin pump/filter/aerator. The sawfish was $10K. The rest was for the insulated transport bin/system, shipping, permits, and customs/inport fees.

Yup - With big rare stuff about half the cost ends up being logistical costs. There is SO much that goes into getting an animal like this across the ocean and into the US that it will make you crazy.

Man, that blows oddball!!! I'd be pissed after paying 16K for a fish and it arrives dead. How big was he if I may ask?
And I know they are on the endangered list, so does that mean no one can have one without special permission. I know Cuban gar are endangered and there are like 25 in the states I heard.
And did the SHED say why it was closed?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Didn't ask anyone but the aquarium was blacked out with a sign saying sorry for inconvenience but this exhibit is closed. But I will tell you what the Amazon exhibit was amazing!

It was a hair under 24".

There is no 'special permission' to own one. You cannot possess one wthout permission from The Australian government and said gov't will not give permission to non-research institutions.

Ahhh, i see. Well boo. Not cool. Id love to see one of these guys someday. It would be cool to own one.
I would say the SHED but i guess that exhibit is closed. And i would like to go check out there amazon stuff! That would be very cool.

Why not? The dwarf FW sawfish grows to an average 48". Very doable in my (and lots of other's) tanks.

Yeah. I ordered one back in the 80s for $16K and it arrived DOA. Haven't been able to find another since. Now that all the FW saws are on the endangered list I'll likely never see one outside a public aquarium.

Ah my bad... I should have not of commented with my little knowledge on the fish! My understanding was they all are getting to a few meters in size. 48" is very doable indeed, sorry for my silly comment :duh:

Sorry to hear about your DOA also, that really would suck!

Most sawfish do get rather large.

If you guys want to see sawfish in the US, there are several public aquariums that have them on display. Off the top of my head: Dallas World Aquarium, Houston Downtown Aquarium, Sea World Orlando, Sea Life MN (the old Underwater Adventures Aquarium in the Mall of America), Shedd Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, Long Beach (Aquarium of the Pacific), National Aquarium in Balt had them (Not sure if they still do), Adventure Aquarium (NJ), Ripley's Aquariums (TN and SC)... I'm sure there are more.

If you are really lucky, we still have a small wild population off the US Gulf coast and down in the Keys. I heard one was seen in the Bahamas last Summer as well.
