My grandpa used to sell gravel, he had a dump truck and a skid loader, and would hall gravel from a quarry to his property. We used to climb the massive gravel pile at his house. One day I was climbing on it, and I found an encrusted coin. After washing it off, it turned out to be an 1897 nickel. What are the chances?

I want to be certain that I understand the meaning of your question. Are you asking: what are the chances that at some time in your life, you will find an encrusted penny minted in 1897 while climbing a gravel pile?

No I am asking what the chances of that coin ending up on that gravel pile for me to find it. And it was a nickel. I'd give an 1897 dime to know who lost it.

Reminds me of the good old days. And it also reminds me Socrates. Plato said, in Republic, book V, "The eunuch who threw something at a bat." It is a riddle, like finding an encrusted quarter from 1897 while climbing on a pile of firewood.

I found a Chinese coin dated circa 1400 AD on a railroad trestle in Gadsden, Alabama. That's what got me started in collecting. Now figure the chance of finding that coin!

Wow that's one to make you say WTF...

Buying bullion at much over spot is not smart. If you are buying it at much over spot your buying from the wrong people no matter what quantity. Gold was 850 dollars an ouce in 1980 today it is 790 dollars. The gold market is at a 28 year high this week. Be glad you didnt pay 850 an ounce for an investment back in 1980 :)

Rare Numismatic coins can be a great investment if you buy the right coin at the right price at the right time.

example: 1911D 2.5 Indian in MS63 was valued at 6k 5 years ago, the same coin sells for over 30k today.

you need to buy key date certified coins at the right price.

If you want to collect coins as an investment, you are probably going to lose money. you can collect bullion (spelling) but when you do you had better buy a large quantity if you want to get it at "spot" price. I like to buy bullion coins. I have never bought precious metal coins at spot becasue I did not buy large enough quantities.

Well, to buy at spot you need to buy, in the case of gold eagle, 5 onces (if I remember correctly).

Do you buy bullion?
Do you think buying bullion now is a good idea?
Some say that bullion must be at $1,500 in order for it to be as valuable as 1980 peaks prices. What do you think about silver as an investment? Silver hasn't really moved yet and it is losing ground as far as the amount of silver in the world. Surely silver is going to have its day at some point.

I collect coins, mostly silver and bronze Roman and Byzantine. Some miscellaneous U.S. and foreign as well. I guess it's a distant #2 hobby for me, after fish of course.
