Anyone breed Mice or rats For there pets???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea i know about the stink , i was looking into African soft hair rats as i hear there smell is much less than mice and they have large litters/

The main difference for me re: mice and rats, and stink, is that mice will seemingly pee everywhere. They climb up the water bottle hangers peeing all the way, the pee up against the sides of whatever caging you use, they just pee pee pee and it's everywhere, and it stinks. With the rats I found I could replace the bedding (I used carefresh 90% of the time) weekly and rarely had to scrub to keep them smelling clean.

I'm curious to hear from anyone who's bred both, am I the only one who noticed a night & day difference in the stink?

Kenyan sand boas (adults and baby's ) 3 adult corn snakes , ball python , leopard geckos, plus were planning to expand our collection very soon.

I've noticed the same difference in odor. Still, I won't breed rats again either. You more or less become a rodent breeder who keeps reptiles on the side.

i would still buy frozen. alot of places run sales so its easy to stock up.

i wouldnt consider your collection to be big enough to have to breed your own. of course i dont know how often you have to feed either.

and if its the shipping that you are worried about the cost of buying supplies ie; food, bedding, cages and so on will offset the shipping cost.

very true , i feed twice a week . but the convenience of having fresh food of all sizes at hand is good.so far ive checked and compared prices of a colony Vs buying online.

The thing that always turned me off really ordering bulk frozen and stocking up is I always wondered if the frozen rodents lost any nutritional value over time. My collection was largely lizards, so I'd go through a fair sized frozen order pretty quickly...and I bought from SAS (not sure if they're still in business or not), and they just bagged the mice/rats rather than vaccuum packing. With your stock you might need more mice than rats, if you bred rats you could easily end up with more adult rats than you'd use. If you're needing mostly mice I'd go the frozen route...really it probably won't save you much money breeding, I'd only do it if you want to do it vs. out of necessity.

im actually considering rats more (looking for soft furred rats ) since my adult corns can easily eat an adult rat .But i am still thinking it over.
