I'm not sure if in HK we have chlorine / cholrimines in tap water... but considering that i have a polleni thats been with me for 16/17 years with out ever having used prime or any such product, i guess safe to say there isn't any? or that maybe in small amounts it doesn't affect fish like we all might think?

Hello; I have been doing water changes for decades without any treatment chemicals. I moved to a new place about two years ago. I stopped by the water company and got a copy of the water quality report. I also talked to the chief engineer who said they only use liquid chlorine (they add fluoride but it is in all water systems and not a factor as i understand it). I asked if there was any chance they might start using any other chemical treatment. He said it is unlikely and that they would make ample public anouncments and notices.
I store my water in containers for about a week with sponge plugs to allow for air exchange and to keep out mosquitoes. This has worked well for me for a long time. For those that are more comfortable spending the money on the extra chemicals, I am not going to try to convince you to change. I felt that others may like to know that it can be done without problems.
My best place was where I had well water. I could add water right out of the tap.

can anyone post anything that shows what damage untreated water does to fish ?

I can tell you from experience what will happen to all your fish in the first 20 mins of adding tap water with chlorine and chlormines without dechlorinator, well most of your fish. They will begin to lose their ability to swim, you will see lots of spinning and twirling and then you will see your fish bleed, yes bleed, then you will see a once perfect fish fade away as their skin begins to burn away like something out of a movie, then they die. A horrible way to go. It happen to me, lost most of the fish in under 30 mins and not just small ones either, some were very hardy fish. What happen with me wasn't because I didn't use dechlorinator, it was because I didn't use enough for the full amount of the tank, only for the amount of water I added. Death would have happen sooner had I not added any at all.

i had two dempsey looked exactly the same almost one was less vibrant but acted the same swam the same i got rid of one cuz of aggression to my brother and he used tap water from city(same size tank) and i will vouche that indeed it does affect your fish in ways you couldnt imagine, never acted the same didint look the same woulnt eat the same altho the first few days he was normal after that is when all this happen

Must be nice to live in a place where you can drink the water from the tap. I don't happen to live in a place like that. We filter our water before we drink it. The public water system we are on draws from the river bed. When it rains really hard, and the river is at flood stage, the water reeks of extra chlorine. When flood stage water gets into the holding tank of the water system, they go door to door posting notices not to use the water at all. Country-living PITA. Because the amount of chemicals in the water varies with the amount of pollutants in the water on any given day, there is no way I would not use Prime when doing water changes--even on nice sunny summer days.
