At our local Petsmart, I saw a couple carrying one of those crappy 5gal. aquarium kits, a net, and a bag full of angelfish to the checkout as my girlfriend and I were entering the store. I didn't say anything to them, but I told my girl that "they are going to need that net to scoop out dead angelfish in a few days". I think the lady carrying the fish heard me, because she turned and looked at me. :grinno:

thats sad ..and i hope she heard you ... Will be the first lesson learned

I do, but only because I'm on the payroll.

I had to step in on a conversation between a customer and one of my supervisors because she was trying to sell this lady a 2.5g "goldfish" starter kit (colored gravel, no light or heater) and 4 rainbow sharks.

My GM tried to get mad at me, but I told her as I hobbyist I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if the supervisor was still making fish decisions.

Good job BDawg,

My managers know what I am capable off and they love whenever I work. They trust my word and usually go with it over customer/coworker.

I love to but in. A guy was trying to but a tank for his kids and got indignant when the clerk tried to exoplain cycling the tank to him. He wanted to but the tank the fish and everything all in 1 purchase. I talked him into taking the tank and all the equipment home to make sure it all works then come back and get the fish after its been running a while. I also told him to get some bio spira(yeah i know) hopefully that will help the tank cycle. Don't know what happened though as I got into a conveersation about 1 of my tanks with another employee.

I usually do given that I have enough time.

I remember the first time I bought my two gallon tank at my lfs, with only an undergravel filter. I paid for my tank and then went to choose six two-inch goldfish and the guys didn't say anything. It was only when I went back because all of my fish are dying that they told me I needed a way bigger tank and suggested that I buy a 50 gallon aquarium from them (which i never did from them). If only someone said something, I wouldn't have made that mistake. :(

I did cut in in a situation like that and someone asked if I had a bug up my @SS haha:ROFL:

im glad you were willing to post that experience. it serves as a sort of affirmation of why some choose to step in and say something. because everyone has to start in the hobby somewhere and for most people its with very little knowledge. (myself included)

next time you see someone making a bad fish choice. Ask if they want to know more about what they are getting into. hopefully you will get a positive responce and there will be a win win situation. they get to have a good fish keeping experience and you get the pleasure of knowing that maybe someone else will get into the hobby that you love.

I ended up with 2 male convicts, because the sale lady didn't know how to tell the difference, but I'm not sure they wasn't all males.

Would you buy a fish from a tank with a decomposing fish in it? I did, I won't again. I put it in a quick set up 10gal (i filled it with water from my 20 and 55, and grabed my attempt at bio filtration only hob), it died. I may have killed it, but i wouldn't stick in my tank. it's a long drive to west knoxville (45 to 60 miles), so i figured i could pay for a dead fish for the gas it'd take me to come back. I know you should have a set up cycled quarentine tank, but I only have one convict and 2 tadepoles in my 55.
