Personally growing them out is the best part to me. YOu see them from when they are the bland of bland hideing from everything. Then you see them full grown flareing all thier color.... good stuff.

I to am a bit impatient when it comes to growing out fish. At the same time it's not as pleasurable and rewarding of a experience when you buy a fully mature fish. I generally try to get cichlids in the 4-5" range when available. And raising fry is just pure bonus to me. That I definitely enjoy.

I totally get it though. It takes sometimes 2-3 years for a fish to really stand out. And I'm going to live to be how old? This is probably why there's a high turn over in my tanks lol

For me, it's all depend on tank size and species.
EX:
*I used live in NJ have 8x2x2 tank and I love to keep a shoal of red bellied pirahna frys (100+) and rise them up in that tank, it does look empty for months until they put on some size and come on out rather than hide all they long until feeding when they are young. So, it's only species I don't mind growing them out. Other species I would buy them in size depend on the tank size, I don't want anything too small or too big ready to die in there :)

I love growing fish out, buy them as small as possible, and see how they develop. To me this is what the hobby is about, I regularely move larger fish along to make space for grow outs, the LFS love this, as they get big fish for which they charge a fortune.

I breed a variety of wc tanganyikan cichlids including many types of wc altolamps. I love watching the fry from most fish grow out but the calvus or comps?.....Ever try to watch grass grow? From birth to 1" is usually close to a year.

In my observation, impatient hobbyists are often impulsive and short term. They will buy new tanks and new fish to quickly fill up the house, preferably adult fish if available at any cost to give instant satisfaction. Many get out of the hobby as quickly as they get in when they lost the patient and interest to take care of the fish. I met a few of these guys and they are no longer keeping fish. Long time hobbyists are patient to raise small fish, but also willing to buy adult breeders to make babies if Needed.
