Angel fish, yeah. I know what your talking about there.Every single angelfish I’ve ever had has been an aggressive SOAB, and not even like expected aggression levels like terrorizing parrotxflowerhorn hybrids and a full grown Oscar aggression levels lol
It's a pelvichromis pulcher. The colors are not mistakable. Is this what you have? Sounds like it's not a Pelvichromis pulcher or kribensis that you usually see.

It is a 55 gallon tankWhat size tank is it in?
I find that tank size (or lack thereof) is almost always the main factor in aggression.
I have just the opposite opinion as tlindsey (respectfully), I don't see any cichlid as aggressive, but if it is, its in the wrong size tank.
An example I've read tons of posts about how mean festae are, I combined them with many other cichlids in my tanks, and never had a problem.

I kept a really aggressive female swordtail once, I had to get rid of it.
That was not the problem for me, she killed the male I think, but I know she killed my dwarf honeymoon gourami. And made all of my fish beside my upside down catfish stay in the bottom left corner.Funny that you say that but I had one aggressive female swordtail as well that started chasing and nipping the tails of my corydoras..... It turned out I had an ammonia spike after cleaning the solo filter way too well the weekend prior....After I got my stats on track, the swordtail was no longer aggressive...
