there seems to be a lot of variation in this fish family, and much confusion over it's name. To be sure, I'm no ichthyologist, I don't know. I've seen a red lipped variety, and I've also seen ones with a yellowish background, that I've read are Geophagus, and not Satanoperca. I got this guy as the lfs was going out of business (dam you poopsmart). I'd been watching him since they got him, he was probably, only five inches, they had him labeled Geophagus Jurupari, a scientific name that seems to be no longer valid, and he was priced at fifty dollars! I don't know if that's a good deal or not, but it was more than I wanted to pay for another big fish. On the last day before they closed, he was still there, and 75 percent off! He had to come home with me. The tank he came out of was filthy, and as soon as I got him home, he developed terrible fin and tail rot. It looked like fluffy white bread mold, and the flesh underneath was completely disolved. I treated him with jungle fungus clear tank buddies, after about two weeks, the fungus gone. Another month and he was completely regenerated

. I read that Jurupari was an amazon jungle demon worshiped exclusively by the men of one tribe. Anyone else have any information regarding the classification of geophagus, satanoperca, jurupari, etc? You guys are awesome.
