Anyone ever bought from Cichlids of the Americas?

If your upset about smaller than advertised I don't think there is a vender in the world that can make you happy. I don't think if they came in 5" bigger you would complain. Just food for thought.

Drew, when feedback is requested, its given. Don't discredit feedback that you disagree with or call into question my expectations and call it a complaint.

My experiences with Jeff have never had this issue with size. Just food for thought.

That's a really good point, although I've had good experience with COA in that regard. After placing an order recently Dan informed me that the Parachromis I ordered were smaller than what he had listed, and he offered to provide me with several extras to compensate. I was OK with that because I agreed to it in advance and had the space. A similar situation came up with Cichlid Connection a while back, but in that case Gage just sent me three 1.5" P. synspilum instead of the 3-4" fish I ordered (along with other stuff, including a large male freddy when I ordered a female). In the vendor's mind it was a good tradeoff (more fish), but for me it was a problem of finding space for the small ones and not having something large enough to go in the tank I had planned for. When placing orders I now ask for confirmation about size so I can adjust my order if necessary. I'd rather the vendor be upfront if they don't have what advertised rather than send me a solution they think should be acceptable.

I'd give COA another chance because he does sell top-notch fish. Just prompt Dan for confirmation about size so that he knows it is an important part of the sale condition.

Great tip! I'll make sure to do that since the quality of stock is beyond question.

I have seen those complaints registered about almost every vendor on the forum.... Was my point. Not taking pop shots at your experience or discrediting your personal account with Dan. I've had fish come in 1 small and three inches bigger than I expected. But you never hear those complaints... Is my point. As long as the fish are healthy that's all I care about. My apologises for your discomfort.

Share the Experience!!

So in the cichlid hobby everyone should be prepared for this and expect this in every one who sells fish? U sell sie 10 shoes on ad, I come to pick up u give me size 8 dam it!!????

He's a real seller. He's been around. All his fish are correct breeds.. I don't think U gonna get Mayans for Festaes, or a Synspilum for a Zonatum. It's good to go

I think this is because people on the forum use total length, while most vendors use the hobby standard of standard length. I never heard of anyone using total length for fish (except fisherman of course) before joining the site. The lengths I've had come in were dead on for SL.

I'm commenting only on this aspect of discussion (not Dan of COA)
Your statement is not really a fair call. It could also be a real stock management problem to receive fish which are much larger than ordered if I'm prepared for little grow outs, and perhaps not also aggression.
I move stock around according to some planning, not having unlimited tank options.
Just food for thought :-]

what is the point of measuring??

What is happening to this world??

I have ordered from Dan three or four times and have always received great service. Some of the fish came in looking a little beat up last time, but were completely healed in a couple weeks. They were all healthy and eating the next day. He has always thrown in a few extra fish too... not only if the size was not what I ordered, which was pretty spot on, but just because he wanted to!! I will def continue to order from him.
