They will breed when they are ready. I have a Hoga pair that has been showing signs for 4 months and still nothing. Give her a place to hide, caves, pipes that she can fit in but he can not. Raise the temp back up, and when you do a water change, just do a 25% water changes with outside faucet water. Simulate the cold rains and breeding behavior by doing this. I use straight cold water for all my changes and I have pairs everywhere. Then again its like humans, just because your parents think that you are a cute couple, doesnt mean that you or her are interested/attracted.

Thanks madness. I know it will take time and I got nothing but time for these 2. They started lip locking this morning a lil. May throw the divider up after a wc today

For most CA cichlids, I actually do the opposite: Keep regular temps lower (74 or so) and raise them for breeding. Often, an 80% warm water change will spur them to get it on.

I also start feeding live red wigglers a couple times per week (before I raise temps).

Having a compatible pair is also important. Best thing to do is start with a group and let them choose each other.

It'll happen eventually - just takes a little patience and experimentation!

Good to know what works for everyone. Hard thing about breed red isletas and getting a group is rapps is the only one who imports them I believe and the one I just purchased from him is the only one I've seen him sell in over 6 months I think when I bought my female from him

An LFS near me ordered some from him a couple of years ago...and within a week or so a couple had paired off and were defending eggs in the 20H they were being sold out of.

It'll happen. Just have patience...

Yea I have all the time in the world now. I sold all my other fish for these 2 minus my female grammodes. She has her own tank

My Lyonsi breed like rabbits now. I keep everything constant and let them handle the rest. The temp stays at 80, 50% weekly water changes, and I keep them on the same diet with some occasional fresh foods. It took them a few weeks to breed. It took them a few months to do it successfully. But now it's pretty much routine. They spawn at least once a month, right after a water change. Leaving the fry with them doesn't break the breeding schedule. They do it any way. But the older fry are chased off or eaten by the parents. So raising some in a separate tank is the only way that I can seem to get any growouts.

You just have to give it time. If the pair is compatible they will breed. Just make sure to take precautions like having a divider on hand and places in the tank that only the female can escape to. I haven't had to use dividers with this pair. The female is smaller but she holds her own, usually making the larger male back off. They are relatively mellow as far as Amphs go. I have no experience with Isletas but I hope my experience helps you a little. Good luck!

I'm not a believer in spurring fish to breed via wc or conditioning. My fish get the same food 24/7 and with my drip system there is no variation in temperature of drastic wc to simulate anything. IMO it's more important to have a compatible pair in a stress free environment with plenty of space.

Thanks everyone. I'm not too concerned about them breeding asap. Just wanted to know what the habits were for amphs when breeding. I just did a 25% wc as I did a 25% wc b4 I got the male. I don't see any real aggression that worries me right now but the divider is ready if needed.
