Anyone ever caught an Oscar while fishing?

I have an oscar as a pet that I caught on hook and line, just south of the broward county/miami border. when i brought her home she was solid brown, so my mom named her fugly, lol. After only a week in captivity, she took second place in her class at the American Cichlid Association convention in indianapolis. Aquamojo got this awesome picture of her at the show (thanks again!)

that looks a lot better than a LFS Oscar.

Once I get her into her 80 gallon bowfront, I'll get some pictures. What color gravel would you guys recommend? Sorry if I'm de-railing.

I've seen a lot of Florida feral Oscars, and it all seems to come down to location. The everglades has the most wild looking Oscars, while the closer you get to cities or towns, the muddier the genetics get. The more rural, the longer the Oscars have been breeding there, reverting back to their wild form un-influenced by domestic releases.

I agree. Down in the glades is where I've seen people pull out yellow oscars. I've never seen ones with yellow and white coloration like they have down there.

I went to the Everglades on a field trip last year and looked out of the board dock and saw a pair of tiger oscars

I caught a lot of Oscars when I lived near Ft. Lauderdale. I've caught tigers, solid reds, albinos, and wild type. Mainly used bread or minnows for bait. They're really fun to catch, tough fighters.

oscars are now the bluegill of the everglades.. the tamiami canal from naples to miami is loaded with them. They do fight very well especially on a fly. cricket patterns work perfectly... as stated before the farther you get from civilization the prettier the patterns get.. also I do take offense to pepople from oregon and Minnesota calling these fish mongrels and basically crap( stick to your mongrel stocked trout).. remember the stock in which these fish came from were wild and the longer these released fish breed ( which is atleast since the 1960's) the more they revert to wild coloration. FYI it is illegal in florida to possess or transport any invasive species of fish alive..
