Anyone ever see a Sunfish quite like this?

Yeah, I'm with those that think you were right; bluegill X green sunfish.

At any rate, I'm nearly sure there's green sunfish in there, because the pectoral fins in both pictures look like they could have come from a pure green sunfish. And I'm nearly sure that what they're mixed with is shaped like a bluegill, because they seem to be a little taller and narrower than green sunfish.

The coloration in the first picture is odd. In the second picture, the coloration looks kind of halfway between bluegill and green sunfish to my eye...some of the iridescent face striping like greenies have on the chin, some very bluegill-like vertical banding on the body...but the first fish looks pretty different than either. That said, colors and patterns do get interesting in hybrids! So, I vote greengill.

Sorry it took so long to get some pics up...

Two questions. First, where is this? Second, Do you have any guess as to how big that blue gill in the first picture at the bottom left is? He looks like quite a slab.

Rock River Water Reclamation District (waste water treatment plant) in Rockford, IL. The Bluegill at the bottom left is quite a slab indeed! The Bluegill I'm attaching a picture of is the largest one in the tank though. He is approaching the size of a small dinner plate and maybe 2.5"ish thick. A lot of people stop in to see the aquarium and I always hear about him being the largest Bluegill anyone has seen. I think he has a lot more potential too. I caught him when he was about 4" long in September of 2009. He is still a young man! The Illinois record is 3lbs 8 ounces. It would be sweet to grow out a state record fish!
