If that's your concern, plastic eggcrate would also serve the same purpose. That's what I stick underneath my big rocks.

I had thought of that, but was concerned about two issues:

1. What if the fish dig the sand out, won't the eggcrate stand out? I think the tile might be hidden under the sand better than the eggcreate since I can color match it to the sand and it is flat.

2. Wouldn't tile be stronger than eggcrate? I know ceramic tile isn't stronger per se, but eggcreate breaks so easy.

i use slate tiles in my 106. i think it looks good and its somewhat difficult to see all the lines if you piece match it all( which can take a while if our at home depot). Hardest part was using a tile saw but luckily my had has one so i used his.

Do you have any pics? I have a tile saw too, so I will use it if i take this approach.

The one problem I always have is fitting it into the tank. In my 55 I got 4 12x12 pieces, which fit almost perfectly except the end one which would've been fine if it wasn't a 1/8'' longer. I ended up just chipping it off and sticking it back in haha. Also in my 125 i had 4 16x16 pieces and ended up getting a fifth that I cut in half with a wet saw.

I use tile just because I love the look of it, & ease of cleaning.

I used ceramic tile in both of my tank and you can barely even see the lines. With most tile types it may be obvious, it never really bothered me personally. It may work to put sand or something in the middle, worth a try.

When you remove the tile, you may find a bit of crap and stuff that found its way underneath it also.

Thanks for the pics and the link to other threads. While I do think it is an interesting idea, I am going to go with crushed coral rather than the tile.
sorry ive been moving all week. just got my 106 moved and going and ill get some pictures on here just for the hell of it. also theres crushed coral on the bottom with it conviently

Are you talking about smooth tile or porous tile. I'm just guessing but won't you have to continually wipe up the brown gunk or algae from the smooth tile and won't it be even harder to get clean if you used porous tile or slate?

its not bad at all to clean it all just sits on top. no algae grows on it just piles of turds
