Sure a lot of it has to do with a turtles personality but you should always use caution especially when dealing with a turtle species that can easily remove a finger.
Coura, my painted turtles were all pretty tame as well. Even wild caught ones would learn to accept my presence after watching my other "tame" Painted turtles ignoring me. My two oldest female Box Turtles are extremely tame. The other day I was trying to plant a blueberry bush in their pen and my one female would not leave me alone. I kept putting her on the other side of the pen and she would crawl back over and pester me. She was very interested in the hole I was digging. Probably hoping I’d find her a worm.
