anyone had this problem

Hey Richard,

p14s are more sensitive than most of the other species and always show signs of discomfort first.
If the rays are shifting back and forward as if they are scratching the disk there are a number of things that could cause this but all boil down to waterquality. If there is a very fine food residu on the bottom, this irritates. Sometimes if there is food rotting in the filter you cannot measure anything but the water is still bad. Too much ammonia, nitrite, nitrate can cause it. When rays weaken they are prone to parasites that may be there, just only in very small numbers. These start to multiply.
It seems most likely if they are coughing is that they have gill parasites. When rays are attacked by these in great numbers they stop feeding. I would recomend using Tremazol if this is the case.
I cannot see from here so your judgement is most important. If you need any info on how to treat let me know.

Greetings Mark

thanks for the info

all water parameters are fine NO2 = 0 ammonia=0 no3 = 5 ph 7.2

i did add some salt to try to help the leo heal faster this was the 1st time the p14 have any salt in the tank i have now flushed the whole tank over the last 3-4 days

If it were following a water change then it could be that the supply had changed but I think you use an HMA anyway dont you?

My guess would have been Nitrate as this has been described to do the same thing but you have very low readings unless the kit is out? My LFS said they had a customer constantly reading low but there was something in theor water throwing off the test kits.

I imagine it is an oddity of water or more probably parasitic.

Funnily enough my fire eel was doing similar the first day in his new tank but it stopped!

i would deff say parasite

IME when a ray totally stops eating its prety serious and not just a slight drop in water quality

if it were me, i would dose with prazipro

i have not seen that for sale in the uk

I've found my flower (and my tiger a bit) do this before when I was feeding more pellets than usual and there was some leftover food residue in the water. They seemed to stop when I backed off feeding so many pellets. So my guess would be leaning towards what mark was saying.

i have just been told that Tremazol is not that safe for ray and some have seen deaths from useing it

think im going to use a bit more salt

hey t1. did you say that the symptoms started after you added salt the first time ?

if it was the salt it could have upset the extra sensative p14 and then the waterchanges daily after might have slowed down the recovery .

its only a guess obviously but the only things you have changed are adding salt that they werent used to and then the additional water changes.

how about reduce feeding and water changes back to normal instead of adding more salt ?

they were fine before the salt. the salt is all but gone so maybe just give them time to get over the sudden changes . dosing with something ray safe might be handy just in case but if the p14s are that sensative i would want to speak to someone who had used that product with p14s before adding it . just to prevent further issues.

hope it gets sorted richard and you get them feeding again . good luck
