Anyone heard of this before?

Came home from work tonite and my motoro ray has been hovering near the top of the tank over top of the bubblers. Never seen this before. I tried shutting them off and he goes down to the bottom of the tank again. Is this normal?? My wife said he had been doing most of the nite when i went to work. He comes down every now and again even with the bubblers on

Just did a water change 3 days ago, no ammonia, no nitrites about 40ppm nitrates, water temp 79 F, and PH about 6.5.

He is eating good, everything seems fine, have had him for 3 months now.

He looks fine, does not seem stressed or anything.


Just curious since i have not seen this kind of behavior in him since i got him.

Was just wondering.

I did just got up and he is still doing it over the bubbles, Do your rays do it almost all the time. usually when i get up in the am he is swimming aroound the bottom looking for food or burried in the sand. Toady at the top over the bubbles.

I wont worry, he is eating, and he looks good.

when rays start hangin out at the to it means their irritated by the sand, getting picked on at the bottom by other fish/rays, or lack of o2 IME

my rays do the smimming near the top thing very rarely.

is he poking his eyes out of the water?
 
Same here bro. I was worried too. becuz im new to holding rays and once i put a bubble strip in my tank, she is almost never on the bottom. lol. Mine is constantly either hovering in the bubbles (eyes not out of water) kinda like curled down. The strip is attached to the side of the glass. So wut mine will do is put the front of her disc to the glass so the bubbles will hit her n then go underneath her and out the back of her (holding her up in the bubbles). Now the past couple of days shes actually found a way to get her whole body between the glass and the bubbles. She faces down toward the bubble strip and tail up in the air. I at first did think about the sand. But is there really anyway to determine if she is being irritated? i used Estes' ultra reef marine sand and i was told by a couple of ray keepers that, that sand is perfectly fine to use.
 
No mine is not poking his eyes out of the water, i just got a weigted rounded bubbler that you burry in the sand and the bubbles come out of the sand. He does come down and will swim around the bottom and i have fed him today and he eats right away,no problems there.

Did a small water change and vaccumed the sand which i do about every 3 to 5 days, and i also scoop out any unused food usually whithin hours if he does not eat more.

He is the only fish in the tank right now, just wating on getting a female soon for him.

The sand is good sand he had been happy with it for 3 months so far, the sand was recommened by my friend who had a pet shop,and he is the one that got the ray for me.

Also mine when hovering over the bubbles, had his disc curled down a bit and his tail is also down and he hovers and moves around a bit trying to get the bubbles under his disc. I dont know maybe he just discovered this after serveral months and his quite content in the aquarium now.
 
as for poking his eyes out of the water, i have observed him just awhile ago, he is happy, hovering over the bubbles, and for the most part his eyes are not out of the water, they do go out of the water, but that is from him trying to hover over the bubbles, as soon as i shut off the air bubblers, he goes back to the bottome and carrys on with what he does on the bottom.
