I love birds, the only ones I have kept are chickens. Talk about guard geese, my rooster is one bad *** dude though. The other day I went into his cage and there was a dead mole, about 7 inches long, with a big gash in his side.

But I am huge into wild birds. I got a window feeder that just attracts so many birds. On the side of that, I have a huge pole, about 6 feet, just sticking out of my house, which I hang three other feeders, and a bunch of suet holders. It has been up and running for a good 5 years now. During the summer I use it to mainly attract blue jays and orioles, by putting out peanuts, oranges, and jelly. Oh, and I can't forget about the Hummingbirds, those are cool birds, because you can get them to sit on your finger and feed, WHICH I DID. Then in the winter I switch into more of just seeds & suet of all kinds for all birds. But it is funny, the birds know where my feeder is and wait for food. I have not put any seed in it for about month, no birds, and just yesterday night, I filled it up. And to my surpise, I awoke this morning to a bunch of chriping chickadees , blue jays, and white breasted nuthatches.

great job FISH ARE FISH FOOD!
keep up your love for birds, both pets and wild.

but chickens can be deadly!! you are absolutly right!

but how do you tame wild hummingbirds?

Hummingbirds are not shy at all. I have this feeder out on the roof of my porch. And they just fly right up to the feeder, no matter who is there. I will be chaning the fluid, and a hummer will come right up to the container and be 4 inches away from me, just looking for some food. So I read and heard people having hummers sit on their fingers or shoulders, so I tried it. I just sat on the railing near my feeder, and stuck my finger right infront of the hole to where it can drink. A couple came and went all going to different holes, but about 10-15 mins later, one came and sat right on my finger for a couple seconds. It couldn't have been more than 10 seconds, but it seemed like an eternity because it was just so amzing. So, you don't need to train yourself for days to sit there for hours. Just 10 minutes and you may be able to get one to sit on you. If not, they will get very close.

Chickadees are easy to tame as well as you can see by my pic, didn't take long at all to do it. They are the only speices I have done it with, I hope to get some titmice and nuthatches to do it next.

I generally only feed birds in the fall/winter but I have bird houses set up in the summer. The price of bird seed can take a toll, in the summer I have huge flocks of redwings and starlings eat all the seed. I like the redwings but I cannot afford to feed them all. I am working on building a pheasent feeder, basically just a little shelter that I will put cracked corn under. I have seen a few pheasents around my yard lately.
I agree on chickens being bad ass. I have seen them kill snakes as well as small rodents. Mother chickens can be very protective, I have had blood drawn by them and have even seen them attack cattle that get to close.

do you see the ring-necked pheasants in your yard?
since i'm going to raise some and release them in my backyard so they might populate around my area.
many people do this, but the pheasants in the south seem to die for no apparent reason.

Yeah, its the ring necks I see all the time, they are the only pheasents around here though there are other ground dwellers like turkey, ruffed grouse and woodcock. Every year the sate releases a bunch to keep the population up.
