Anyone into oddball plants?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've got your terms mixed up. No, most houseplants are not poisonous. Most houseplants are toxic if ingested but not poisonous. And especially not lifethreatening. Not to mention listed under the top 100 most toxic plants in the world. For something to be poisonous it must secrete poison and this plant does. 1 scrape and your dead in about 45 minutes. Extremely dangerous. If you have a cat and it so much as rubs up against the plant and then proceeds to clean itself even days later the cat is a goner. If this happens immediately pickup the cat and lock it in the shower or soak the fur in cold water and cleanse thouroughly for 45 minutes. Discard the plant. Their IS an anti-venom. Though hospitals don't generally carry it and most die before they can get to it. Your best bet is to cut off blood circulation to the entire infected limb. This should give you at least 3-4 hours to get to a hospital depending on the entry point and the time passed before cutting off circulation.
:WTF: you just killed a great thread.....

How? I was just correcting somebody with incorrect information. I was the 1 that bumped it because I subscribed to this thread. Because it is a good 1. Might have gone just a pinch off topic.

Oh and gotta stop jinxing threads. Saying I killed a thread is only your opinion and the vet guys too. Lets not turn that into a fact. That doesn't help anyone.

I can't tell if he's serious or not.....Biggles, this is Wiggles you're talking about. He's like Oddball's protege...I'm sure he knows what he is doing...And where did the speech about toxic plants come from? Cuz I'm pretty sure a Sago Palm is harmless...

Edit: I did not know that it was poisonous to ingest, but still...where'd the speech about touching it and dying come in? And who just randomly eats houseplants anyway? (cats not included) I'm sure a lot of the plants at Wal Mart will give you a bad case of the runs if ingested...

What? Not serious? What could I POSSIBLY gain from posting the above on my phone. Which takes an hour and a half to type, btw.

Well I was on amazon about to click the buy button for a bonsai sago palm and I looked it up beforehand and found this Wikipedia page on toxicity here

Toxicity

"Cycad sago palm is extremely poisonous to animals (including humans) if ingested. Pets are at particular risk, since they seem to find the plant very palatable.[2]*Clinical symptoms of ingestion will develop within 12 hours, and may includevomiting,*diarrhea, weakness, seizures, and liver failure or*hepatotoxicity*characterized by icterus, cirrhosis, and ascites. The pet may appear bruised, have nose bleeds (epistaxis), melena (blood in the stool), hematochezia (bloody straining), and hemarthrosis (blood in the joints).[3]*The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center estimates a fatality rate of 50 to 75% when ingestion of the sago palm is involved. The incidence of ingestion by pets has risen by over 200% in the last five years.[4]*If any quantity of the plant is ingested, a poison control center or doctor should be contacted immediately. Effects of ingestion can include permanent internal damage and death."

Didn't answer the question...And I'd just like to throw out there that I know a couple people willing to write a novel on their phone for a laugh. :)

And you didn't read the edit. And now we're all out of whack in our responses. lol. This was for the one before that. ^

This isn't to say that Cycads aren't dangerous to animals, but it's main danger lies in it's palatability. Most poisonous (or toxic, the distinction you made is totally incorrect) plants are very bitter or unpleasantly aromatic, but apparently the Cycad tastes good.

Yes, you were correcting someone (I believe you refer to me) with incorrect information (your information was uniformly incorrect).

Cycads are only poisonous if eaten. Your post that took you so long to type is pure drivel, spouting ridiculously asinine advice.

Even tomatoes plants, aside from their fruit, are poisonous if ingested. Dan F is right there are tons of poisonous plants around the house and garden. A common one in most yards is Castor Bean and Oleander. But only a handful of plants will kill you, comparing them to a rattlesnake bite is extreme.
