Anyone Keep Burbot?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
k cool. i googled them but hard to find a good pic.
they look kinda like a bowfin. but obviously can stand pretty cold water

I've read that they outright need cold water. Even in New York, when it starts getting warm, they head towards deeper waters to stay with the coldest part. No way of keeping them in any sort of tank but a dedicated cold water tank. I'd say high 60's at the most.

I'll look for some pictures as well. They remind me of a mix between a bowfin and a snakehead. Unlike bowfin they get nice patterns, get larger (imo) and have barbels reminiscient of a catfish.

I like this picture... not great but it shows their length and elongated body well. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi%3Fdo%3Dpost_attachment%3Bpostatt_id%3D56124&imgrefurl=http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi%3Fpost%3D547880&usg=__tJLPvMcMbGpxPO6V9YZwTj-n8OA=&h=453&w=604&sz=40&hl=en&start=199&tbnid=cpsDz_SWyBpM2M:&tbnh=111&tbnw=154&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dburbot%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D529%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C3669&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=766&vpy=153&dur=1233&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=99&ty=115&ei=79BpTNbhGsTflgeX16yfBQ&oei=IdBpTODnLcT58Aaa3uGtBA&esq=15&page=10&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:199&biw=1345&bih=529

I've always wanted to keep one of these, but I'd guess they a need a chiller. So until I get a chiller :( .

Yes a chiller is a must, during college on a local electro fishing trip we caught a 8" one that we kept for the semmester. We originally placed him in our indoor tanks with the other natives but soon realized something was wrong(the water was too warm) so we moved him down to the hatchery. Placing him in one of the empty fry tanks which was a flow through system from one of our two wells. He did much better in there growing at a fast rate also, at the end of it we released him back into Onieda lake at close to 20".

The biggest one I caught was around 18 pounds, but they get a lot bigger.

Bumping this thread for more Burbot discussion.

I think my next project will involve a chiller. :D

A walleye/burbot tank would be awesome.

2 groups of large fish sitting on the bottom doing nothing.

They are both cool...but in aquaria especially...not very active. Plus you would need a huge tank. Save your burbot for the frying pan people.

That being said I wouldnt mind seeing pictures of someone who is actually crazy enough to do it. :D
