Anyone Keep Burbot?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I couldve sworn someone here had burbot. I know people over at NANFA do, if I had the room and felt like doing a cold tank they'd be first on my list

Wow i feel dumb for never thinking of that! I have been trying to get a flathead catfish for a while and have had no luck in New Hampshire. I could have just hit the ice and got the only freshwater species of "cod". Would this fish need a chiller though? It can hit 90 for a few days here and i know my tanks can go w/o heat in the summer mos and the cichlids are fine.

I've kept a burbot for a while in ~65 degree water, did fine but as I tried to slowly raise the temp to 70 degrees for the summer months, it got fungus and died. Keep below 65 degrees if at all possible, I'd imagine 50-55 would be ideal.

I would not try keeping one without a chiller, even in New York.

LOL i live in troy you fish the hudson alot?

Nice! I don't actually fish too often. Mostly hit the Mohawk around the locks. Maybe every couple of years do some striper fishing in the Hudson on my uncles boat.

Also spend a fair amount of summer time catching walleyes at Sacandaga, though its been less than impressive the last few years.

I mostly keep monster tropical fish. :)

I want to see someone do this, enough talk lol

I am slowly mapping out a plan for a chilled tank, the problem as usual is money. A chiller alone is going to cost me an absurd amount of money.

Give me a while. A long while. ;)

Well, time to breathe some life back into this thread.

I know that I was trashing this idea earlier...and that the one person that has talked about higher temps on here had the issues that I predicted before they posted...BUT

I electro-shocked three of them today. Smallest was <5". Largest was >15".

These were a light yellow with brown "camo" patterning. Too cool to pass up, especially knowing there are small ones locally near by.

As far as the non-activity goes...that is okay...it will be going in a 120g native tank with other non active natives. :D

Just figured I would hit you guys up with the update...there is at least one mfk'er who isnt afraid to try this...Ill post pictures once I get one in a tank.
