My knife spends most of the time in a cave during the day so as far as an active surface dweller I wouldn't recomend theme because 1 they aren't surface dwellers and 2 they don't come out a lot during the day
Florida gar wont work with your stock, because the cichlids will cause him to dart into sides of the tank.
I agree with above...Flowerhorns are psycho. You would probably have to get rid of him.
Once the Flowerhorn is out of there, I think you would be fine with a big Chalceus. If you get the ones that have yellow pelvic fins, they get much larger than the silver variety with only red/pink tails. Don't expect much movement out of them...they basically just hover in one spot and wait for stuff to hit the water's surface.
