So in my previous thread ( https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/posts/7749187/ ) I have a juvie EBJD and Oscar together. They both appeared to be fine and eating like pigs. Until this morning I noticed the EBJD seemed more timid and didn't come up for food at first but eventually ate some FD mysis shrimp.

On the side near his gills there is this white thing. It doesn't look like fuzz/fungus or some sort of gill fluke or anything. He's not flashing. It looks more like possible a scale that's come loose? The fin next to it looks slightly frayed too.

The oscar doesn't seem aggressive towards him when he came up for mysis shrimp so I don't really know what's going on. Maybe he hurt himself on the drift wood or something or maybe when he tried to eat off the substrate the BN pleco beat him up a bit (he's kind of an ass). Anyway should I not be worried since he's still eating? I've attached some pictures.

Another thing I noticed is one of his eyes kind of has this dome over it. It seems to have always been there. I've had other cichlids before like rams that had eyes like that and they eventually grew out of it. Any ideas?

Thanks,

From the last pic it looks like cloudy eye or it possibly scraped it eye against something as for the white speck don't know what it could be. For cloudy eye just keep water parameters in check.

Keep your eye on the Oscar could be tagging the EBJD without you knowing. I suggest standing back away enough to see if everything is fine .

Yeah the white spec is a bit odd. I know first hand what fungus, ick or even anchor worms look like but it's neither. It almost looks like when a fish gets beat up and a little bit of white flesh is sticking out kind of thing. Maybe he just hurt himself or the 5 inch BN pleco decided to crash into him because he got too close to his algae wafer. I think I'll just wait and see, since he's eating anyway.

I know the oscar has been a clumsy swimmer and scraped a few scales off himself, they were just hanging loose, at first I thought it was something else but upon closer inspection it was definitely a scale.

That's a good idea. Maybe tonight I'll turn out the lights in the room, sit far back and watch.

You have been advised in your previous thread that the EBs are (because of line breeding) a very sensitive species, prone to bacterial and fungal infections. If I were to keep them, I would keep them in a special tank, all to themselves where water would be changed daily, food intake would be monitored etc etc. I especially would not keep them with Oscars and plecos, coming from totally different water chemistry (they are also geographically incorrect)
But that aside, even the normal JDs do not do well with other even slightly more aggressive cichlids in nature. I have spent time snorkeling with them in Mexico.
The only places they seem to do well, is where there aren't any other cichlids, only dithering live bearers.
Take the JDs in the cenote below, where Mayaheros uropthalmus dominate, the JDs are torn up and relegated to hidy holes and caves, and their population does not compare.

Below in Eden where JDs are the dominant cichlids, they are far healthier.

Even though you haven't seen it, I bet when you aren't around or at night he is being harassed by the oscar.
I had guppies only disappear at night. Turns out the oscar would pick them off one at a time while they slept. Just because you don't see the aggression doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I'd move him to a different tank sooner rather then later.

Only other tank I have is a 10gal... with shrimp.. not sure what I should do.

Guys it doesn't look good. The EBJD just spends most of his time either in the corner, in the plants or sitting next to the cories. Food falls right beside him and he doesn't look interested (he was eating it for about two weeks before) and when he sees the cories eating it he just swims up looks at it and shows no interest. He doesn't look beat up or anything. I don't think the O is tagging him or harassing him. I think he's just sick. I'll just wait and see because there isn't anything obviously wrong that I can do anything about.

That fish needs to be removed immediately IMO. Like duanes has said, I believe EBJD's should be kept in species tanks, they're so fragile.
