Rabbit manure is considered cold manure and does not required that it be aged. If you use horse manure it requires 90-120 days to age before you can safely use it on crops which you are going to eat. Also horse manure is considered hot manure (with lots of nitrogen) and it will burn your plants. Someone offered me 3 free rabbits on craiglist but I can't care for them. I wish I could. I'd have to build a pen for them and I don't have the space, or really the time/energy to raise them. I take care of a garden, pond, several fish tanks, 4 dogs, and cat. So I don't want another responsibility. I may just hit up a place that sells them and ask if I could take the manure.

Krich -

I just need it for my entire garden. But the most important reason is because I am going to be putting in a pomegranate tree and need to condition the soil. I have a compost bin but it just doesn't generate enough compost to keep up with my demands. Right now is the best time too to start prepping the soil. I grow tomatoes, peppers, garlic, onions, carrots, radishes, beets, beans, parsley, lettuce, cilantro, sage, rosemary, lavender, anise hyssop, chamomile, yarrow, kale, basil, dill, fennel, melons, squash, cucumbers, spinach, sunchokes, yacon, crosnes, several mints, flowers, beneficial weeds, lemon tree, lime tree, goji berry tree, fig tree, blueberries, and strawberries.

P that is interesting and probably explains how you can burn a lawn with grass fertilizer...I did that once trying to grow a nice carpet in my front yard.....You seem to have quite an operation going on and I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of your garden.

I used to have rabbits. Geez where were you 15 years ago? You could've picked up a mountain of rabbit turds from my backyard back then .

If you can't find rabbit manure, I think steer manure at hd is just as good. Its cheap too. I use it for all my fruit trees. I have thai guavas, asian persimmons, limes, and dragon fruit trees and they all do fine with steer manure and those miracle gro seasonal tree spikes at home depot.

Yes, you are right about aging horse poo. I forgot that guys who took mine had big compost piles for that, and used it next season.

try inquiring at livestock feed stores about rabbit keepers. they are a common project with FFA kids, and ppl with limited space raise them for food. post a card on bulletin boards. I think those venues will have mounds of poo.

I'll post up pics when Spring rolls around and everything is growing nicely. All I have now are mostly Fall/winter crops and all the warm weather stuff like peppers are looking a little weak. It sounds like I got a ton of land but I don't I actually have quite a small backyard. I just use every possible nook and cranny though, and a bunch of stuff I grow in pots too. I even use the flower bed in my front yard. If you know what plants can tolerate some shade, or those that will grow in deep shade you can add more plants to your property. Most edible things people are familiar with though like a bunch of sun, but peppers and tomatoes can tolerate some shade despite what people say. I have a huge pepper plant over 4 foot in a semi shady spot in the ground.

That's cool.I tried growing a few kinds of fruits and veggies in the past but the vermin beat me to most of it.

Yeah. I am lucky I don't got much around here but oppossum, rats and mice (occasionally), and birds. Just recently a few chickens have been coming to my backyard and have damaged a few plants. At first I thought they were cool but they are destructive. I haven't seen them for awhile but when I do I am gonna scare them off. Luckily I have a few cats that prowl around so they keep the mice/rats and other critters away.

The previous owners of my house had some grapes growing way in the back of the yard.No one else wanted to eat them besides me so I eventually cut them all down.I don't know if the former owners were into wine making or what?
