I have kept a few in the pat myself, but they always seem to die..Don't seem to do very well even with semi-aggressive Tiger Datnoids. I hear they reach a certain size, and then die. U guys hear the same thing? I would love a 30" Payara. Very impressive looking, though very boring to keep.

large species tanks

There are several species that are referred to as payara. Which one are you all talking about?

Yes, someone in predatoryfish said they wouldnt get pass 12" in captivity due to the "high oxygen" demand for adult fishes (need strong flowing water , highly oxygenated)
In addithion, their grow rate are very slow, I got mine from 4~5" too, and have been keeping them for 1 yr + coming to 2 yrs. They only feed on live feeder, eg small koi/goldfish, red fish, platly etc.
My bigger one is close to 10" and smaller abt 6"+, although I bought them from abt the same size.

i think thats just a myth..ive heard that though..nice 2ft armatus would turn me on:eek:

I had 3 of them from 11" - 12" in 72 30 30 inch tank but sold them recently. They need clean water with some current. That tank has a pump rated at 8500 lph. They will find the area that the current is to their liking. Sorry for the quality of the pics, it's from my mobile phone
