Anyone taking/taken Philosophy class? I am currently taking a college philosophy class. It is a required class for the fire science degree. To be more specific the branch of philosophy i am taking is Ethics. The class teaches you about morals, what utilitarian is, and etc is.That class is super hard! Loads of reading and the quizzes are hard and worth a lot of points. The book is ridiculously hard to understand. :irked:

I took philosophy back in my last year of HS... i remember having to hand in an essay almost every week or every other week... lots of reading comes with the territory...

Although looking back it was a rather useless subject for me to take, it was still interesting while i was doing it...

I go to Cal Poly SLO and am a forestry and natural resource major with a concentration in fire and fuels management. I have a family history of city firefighters and am looking to do that! I just became junior standing and took phil last quarter fortunately but it was a hard class. if your reading the republic or anything like that just do a few pages every fifteen-twenty mins until your quota is met for the day. the pic in your avatar kinda looks like SLO.......where are you going to school?

Yes its is a useless subject! Well for my field of studies at least. We have to write a six page essay about controversial topics. If we dont pass the paper we dont pass the class. :( Thats what I am mostly worried about. Reading in that class is ridiculous. I read 75 pages yesterday and today. :irked:

Cool! You want to become a firefighter? I am currently in my last year of community college! :headbang2 I will be transferring to UCLA or ASU. :headbang2 I was also thinking about SLO because a few of my friends go there and there is a fire engineering program there. http://www.ksby.com/news/cal-poly-to-offer-new-fire-protection-engineering-degree/

I had to take Intro to Philosophy and then take Environmental Ethics, both very hard classes but Environmental Ethics was SOOO much better. Intro to Phil was just unbearable, didn't do too well in the class, haha. But yea, for some people, philosophy just clicks, and for others it's just painful. I guess one of the things that made it so hard for me was that there are no facts or right answers, it's just developing a stand and defending it with anything you can, but every point you bring up can be refuted by the opposing side:nilly::nilly: you're giving me awful flashbacks just thinking about the classes

Ya currently a PCF at a local CDF station. CP SLO is legit!!! super nice campus and great weather year round!

Love the weather there! Been there a couple of times before. Have you ever looked into that fire engineering program at SLO?

im taking a philosophy class in college somewhere in socal. negative side to these classes are, they are pretty useless in real life. we talk about whether god exist. we talk about the definition of knowledge ( which sounds so awesome.... but, the definition we came up with , is... less exciting) . we talk about whether we are brains in vat where everything is just images and senses the are imaginary, or whether we really exist. We talk about if WE are just matter , or matter + mind , or just mind. Positive side to these classes are, they can get interesting in terms of going off on tangents that you normally wouldn't think of. Interesting how you could arrive at some sort of conclusion that you might not have thought about , but can actually trace back through logic how you derived the conclusion. But of course, if you want to become a firefighter, that might not be the most relative class, and I feel your pain as it is a "general ed" requirement when my major have nothing to do with philosophy :)

* note: i guess i might be biased because we barely read anything and have any hw in that class, and.... we can pass with like 35% on exam because thats the curve xD
