ANYONE USE THE FLUVAL FX5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks great on the outside, but is mostly full of filter foam like the other newer Fluvals. this is a very poor design. Opt out for a Eheim or if you like cheap a Rena.

What's the current filtration? What media are you using? Water change schedule? With algae could be just a few tweaks and it should be under control.

I'd try to fix the problem before buying a new filter, especially that filter.

will adding salt make any difference? do you need to know what types of fish or just the filtration? I have two aquaclears that filtrate 70-110 gal each so i got plenty of that. We do one water change a week, take out 30 gallons... and gravel vac once a month or every other week i believe....

As much info as you can spare. I wouldn't add salt unless you need to. But for algae outbreaks i dont' think salt is needed. Got any pic's of the tank?

The FX5 is a good filter however the way the lid is designed is total $hit. these lil orange cylinders hold the bolts in place so u can turn the nobs to seal the lid. they break very easily. cost 10$ each to repair. also takes forever to unscrew and re-screw the lid.

i think u want ur algae bloom thread however, 25-40% water change a week sounds good to me. i do 40 gallon w/c a week in my 120 and my tank has 104 gallons of water in it. so 40 gallons is about 41.6% of 104

I try to do 40-70% atleast once a week. More or less depending on what i've been feeding and if i've had to treat with meds or anything.

thanks everyone for the input on the filter... I still want one though ;)

Who doesn't they seem like very good filters, i dont' have one but would love one if/when i upgrade lol

Your issue is with algae and filtration may not help. May need to make a new post or do some searching on Algae blooms.
