ny
I've bought two in the last few months to use in my sump, and both are noisy as hell. :( I examined the impeller and it looked fine on both. They're supposed to be silent! So far I can't stand the noise, so I've disconnected after an hour or so. Will the noise go away if I let it run for a few days? Thanks.

They are usually very quiet...you must have air trapped in the impeller housing, this will cause a "clacking" noise...the front cover leak is the only problem I have ever had...if it isn't runnng silent then I wouldn't run it too very long. Try to backflush it by plugging it in and out a few times...a pic of the instalation might be helpfull too...

yup there not quite, i use a mag18 for my water changes, i just plop it in the tank and in a few min i am done doing a 50% wc on my 240 :D all there good for imo or a pond, but a return pump in a living room no:D

you may have trapped air

i use 2... mag 18 and mag 9.5 all in my sump... not noisey at all

Not sure what the problem is. I don't think it's air. sounds more like a mechanical sound. I'll keep experimenting. Thanks for the input.

I just got a Mag 24 and its so loud it almost drowns out the TV. Thats ridiculous. Its going back but I need to find something else.

The 24 is way to much, so I'll downgrade to a mag 12 size, but is the mag 12 quieter? I figure at 1700 gph at 5' thats a lot of water moving so it should be noisier.

I'm running pvc straight into the pump and I think some of the noise is the humming of teh pipes from pump vibration. Will flex tube fix that, and where do you buy such tubing?

Thanks!

I think I just went through this problem, I have a mag 9.5 and originally I set it up with clear tubing from the sump to the mag. The clear tubing sagged a little in the middle because it wasnt hard. Air would get trapped in the middle and the pump had a hard time getting water back into the tank,--it was very noisy.

The next thing I did was replace that clear tubing for PVC piping, STILL very noisy, it vibrated on the wood it was sitting on.

My solution was to attach the pump as close to the sump as I could, and I put a new dry sponge underneath. Its now as quiet as I think it could possibly be. The only noise from my tank is the water draining into the sump, and I kinda like that :)

I hope this was helpfull

i would reccomend putting the pump inside the sump and run a flexable tubing to the pvc, it will be alot quieter, even though you can run the pump external it is not reccomended. i was going to do the same with my setup, but switched to inside the pump for sound reasons.

Yeah my pump is inside the sump and was sitting on a sponge.

The only flexible tubing i have seen in for pools and is in long rolls. Do you have to buy that stuff from a pool store then?

I run ALL mag's outside the sump's , and canaster's such as Ocean clear's, heat being one reason, i have done it this way for years with no problems they are made for either use, internal or external, another reason i like to use them outside of the sump is heck of lot less cleanup. only having to clean the inside of the pump when its time. and also alowing you more room in your sump for media, heater's etc.

i also use a prefilter on the inlet going to the pump for last stage filtering. :D

who says it's not recomended to run a mag external?
