Were they brand new or used?
I am using a mag-drive 18 in my 150g. It is being use internally, and makes no noise at all.
They are so quite I will be getting 2 36's for my 600g.

Let me kow how you're 36s turn out. That's what I have-- noisy as hell. Good luck.

Using sponges under the sump will help with the vibration against a hard object, the other is the flex pipe. But I really hate over stating what has been over stated. Definately check to make sure air is not trapped also.

there are no places to even attatch suction cups to a magdrive ;)

lol, thats what I though but I still a n00b at all this so I didnt want to say :D

I just got a used mag drive 5 Makes a lil noise but i think its cause I need to put it outside my sump with a sponge under it. works great though, an there easier to match up to most overflows (gph an all that) Im prolly going to replace my pentair aquatics pump with a mag drive 7 or 9.5 to.

I have one mag internally with no noise and one used externally. The external had some air trapped so I unplugged it for a minute and started it back up, no problems.

I htink most my problem was that i had a Mag24. It takes alot of motion to move 1800gph at 6 feet. Hopefully a Mag12 will be better.
