Yeah my pump is inside the sump and was sitting on a sponge.

The only flexible tubing i have seen in for pools and is in long rolls. Do you have to buy that stuff from a pool store then?

I always get it at lowes, you can buy it in feet, it seems to be pretty good stuff.

If mag pumps dont work for you try quiet one pumps there great but if i hade a choice i would go with a mag.

I have two Mag-18s running internally and they're not loud, IMO.

These guys must be running externally if they are getting noise.

Running it internally-- in sump-- and it's noisy as hell. I've tried two in the last month, so I don't think they're both defective, although I guess anything's possible.

Not sure what the deal is, but it's frustrating because I can pnly use them for water changes (too noisy for continuous use).

yeah mine was submersed as well and super loud. I am going to get a new Mag12 and try again. Pretty much last shot bc BigAls is a crappy company to deal returns with. Either their computers are down or you the operator you are speaking to cant do the swap etc etc.

Were they brand new or used?
I am using a mag-drive 18 in my 150g. It is being use internally, and makes no noise at all.
They are so quite I will be getting 2 36's for my 600g.

I think I just went through this problem, I have a mag 9.5 and originally I set it up with clear tubing from the sump to the mag. The clear tubing sagged a little in the middle because it wasnt hard. Air would get trapped in the middle and the pump had a hard time getting water back into the tank,--it was very noisy.

The next thing I did was replace that clear tubing for PVC piping, STILL very noisy, it vibrated on the wood it was sitting on.

My solution was to attach the pump as close to the sump as I could, and I put a new dry sponge underneath. Its now as quiet as I think it could possibly be. The only noise from my tank is the water draining into the sump, and I kinda like that :)

I hope this was helpfull

Mags dont come with suction cups like say a RIO?

Mag Drive pumps are the best internal pumps you can buy IMO. Here is one site that recommends they not be used externally.

http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_powerheads_pumps_danner_mag_drive_supreme.asp?CartId=

thats not even the company who makes them! when the company who makes them states they can be used inside or outside a sump then they are for either use.

otherwise if they are not to be recomended for external then the manf would not state it ws ok for external use.

again i use mine outside my sumps. (when i used them) and never had a noise issue "vibrateing" , they just run loud , thats mag's for ya. :D
