Anyone with experience with SA dwarf cichalids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The borelli is quite common and cheap here in the UK. I can't speak for prices in Canada.
I suggested borelli for their hardiness and tolerance of cooler temps and harder water
okay but those arnt really available.... if i were to go with apistos and 3 curviceps... how many apistos would you recommend.. id say there would be alot of territory to claim among est 3 inchs of leaf litter eh?

You gave me hope in maybe trying the Checker Board Cichlids again. I can see why most like the Wetspot.:) They get rare and hard to get species. Also thanks for sharing your experience with those little gems.:)
I was super fortunate to have WS as my LFS at the time.

BUDDY... #1 THANSK for showing me those leaf litter jewels, i dont think i am ready fro checkerbored cichlids yet, too much of a risk if they die. money is kinda an issue. So should i got with 5 curviceps and 3 apistos? or 5 apistos and 3 curviceps? if i go with 5 apistos i would do Pandoru, if i go with 3, then i can chose from panduro, macmastri, and trisfacite, my plan is te get 3 inch deep leaf litter with twigs, coconuts, and bark hopefully WHAT 9 dwarf cichlaids would you chose?

The 120, is it a 4 or 5 foot long tank? That will make a difference in stocking.

Leaf litter is fantastic and I love using it but I would recommend using lots of driftwood to break up lines of sight as well which will help, as even dwarves can get protective especially if they end up spawning.

It might be nice to get a larger group of curviceps and let them pair off, then keep 2 pairs. I guess you could see how they do as an odd-numbered group but I wonder if there'd be more chasing that way? Not sure.

I do like the idea of only one cichlid species with a bunch of schoolers, but it seems that you want to get the apistos as well , so you could maybe then add a pair/trio of them depending on the species. They'll appreciate your coconut caves.

If you're considering doing floating plants at all you might also consider some hatchetfish or nannostomus eques/"hockeystick" pencilfish, as they'll add fish to the top level of your tank. I think most fish appreciate floating plants but it seems to calm the top dwellers so they're less skittish and less likely to jump in the case of the hatchets (need a lid for hatchets for sure.) I have had and like both for different reasons. The pencilfish hang out at an odd angle - diagonally in the water which is quite unique. They have nice coloration and you'll see male/male activity fighting over the females.

Just some thoughts.
