API products are fine to use and are pretty high quality. I personally don't have to use declor because i use our well water. Very very low in nitrates, no wierd substances and 0 chlorine and chloramine. What i do use declor for is when i find driftwood, rocks ect. out in the creek by the house i usually give them a diluted bleach scrubbing and then declor with Pond declor from home depot. Got it for $4 and it treats 2000 gallons i believe.
i use api:
Stress coat
Stress zyme
melafix
test kits
I like to use stress zyme monthly when i clean out the filters to replace any BB i might have clean out
Don't get me wrong, if I had to pick a 3rd in the list of products I trust, it is API. Some of their products rock, some not so much. I only hesitate with them every so often because they have quite a few "quick fix" products while the 2 I previously mentioned have products concerned with a healthy aquarium.
Stress Zyme is Snake oil, and stress coat is not much better. Stress Zyme has NO LIVE BACTERIA. Do not use, waste of your money. I used this product while starting tanks for 6 years years, never saw a difference in the cycle period. JUNK JUNK JUNK
Bio spira can be an invaluable aid if and only if it's been properly handled. By the way if you know of a shop or distributer not following the recomended handling proceedure then contact Marineland.
As always however the most effective....least expencive and quickest way to cycle any tank is through the use of established media from existing tanks. This is one of the main reasons that i always use the same type of filtration equipment...it makes this a lot simpler. Just avoid the temptation to remove more than a quarter of the established BB from any one tank.
I use API test kits exclusivly but no one brand does everything well.
Not sure if you know this, but Pond Prime is not anymore concentrated than normal Prime. If you read their website it removes the exact same amount of chlorine (3.3 mg/L) as normal Prime. It's only labelled as Pond Prime because they figure chlorine outgasses faster in a pond since it's open water.
Not that it's not cheaper to buy it in bulk, but you are not getting a concetrated formula and they recommend using the same amount as you would use if it was normal Prime in an aquarium.
