Appeal of Hysterix

they would probably be the best bet for your bar tank as scobina are not around...
 
Not that they are that rare Nic, you don't see them that often. I see retic and motoro more often than hystrix. Maybe before the ban there was alot, and now that they lifted the ban. We may see more, but there is still a quota for them.

Of all the rays I have personally had, I regret selling my hystrix more than any other ray. They are such cool, compact rays. They are very thick lol. I thought mine had more personality then any motoro Ive had. My little 7" hystrix would swim under my big 12" motoro female (she was a b***h) and steal food from her! Other times she would just ride on the motoros backs.

She was a great little ray. If you can buy one, do it, you wont regret the choice. I have learned that just because a ray is prettier then another, that doesnt mean you will like it more.

Although looks are not the only factor determining my purchase, they are a large contributor. My bar is a focal point of a lot of my parties and the rays need to be "Pretty" when observed by the layperson. Hysterix look similar to small motoros with colorless and malformed spots. Personally I do like the Leo like tail a lot, and the "thickness" is really cool looking. However the layperson with no point of reference may prefer the more classicly beautiful aspects of the motoro, i.e. coloring, clear distinctive spots, and marbling.

Just in the past few months the marbling has really begun to come in for my motoros and the WOW factor is really beginning to scream.

If I do go with hysterix for my next batch should I try 1.2 or 2.1 or stick with a pair. My tank is 84x32x11.
 
Hystrix are certainly rare as cb animals. Far more so from what I have seen than even the black rays. You see tons of cb Motoros and can even get blacks readily enough as cb but I have not seen a cb Hystrix for sale.
