Apple/mystery snails with flowerhorn?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha ain’t that the truth, I tend to avoid the large box store pet shops but I know there are some good ones out there
The one near me I actually know the manager of along with several of the workers who own bgk and big cichlids and the one with the bgk actually has a bunch of big exotic fish and takes care of the fish at the store as well so they’re always in somewhat decent condition and the manager takes care of the plants and snails and she goes above and beyond with them. I trust the store a lot ( a lot more than a couple bigger fish stores around me) so there shouldn’t be any problems

hey ive done it. it doesnt work the snails get attacked any time they move so they dont come out of their shell and i presume would soon die of starvation if the stress didnt kill them first. personally i removed mine after a day or two and it lived a year after that. if you have a sand bed malaysian trumpet snails could be beneficial. i thought itd be interesting to try a flounder or something however i doubt itd work and im definitely not recommending it. i dont recommend putting things with flowerhorns because they tend to damage themselves while frantically attacking their tankmates. my flowerhorn shredded his fins and lost all his fin extensions while terrorizing a very large pleco for a night( i temporarily added him to clean up the tank). personally i dont think the parasites are a huge worry for snails, but flowerhorns are definitely prone to crashing due to their iffy genetics so i dont blame people for worrying about that. however your flowerhorn has almost certainly been exposed to a million other pathogens in holding tanks and so on before reaching you if you got it at a fishstore.

itd be nice to see some pics of your FH.

https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/posts/8348353 here’s my FH, daisy. Surprised you haven’t seen him yet as he’s been getting a lot of attention lately including managing 10k views o YouTube on one video and 200-600 views on others of him. I’ve had him since about 1” and has always been extremely docile for a Flowerhorn, he has the same temper any community cichlid except for when it comes to my hand or the magnetic algae scraper but has been housed with tetras, red devil, and plecos and they have all never had any problems together. He’s even housed with a live plant at the moment and doesn’t do anything to it except for hiding in it from time to time

I made the mistake of housing my fh with a pleco, safe to say my pleco had to move out to the “farm”, the snails are the only living things he seems content with ignoring.
