Apple vs The FBI

The bigger problem I see is that if Apple gives in, what stops other countries (China for example, Apples largest market) from demanding the key?

Exactly I agree. Then the Chinese government has access to every government and corporate employee who uses their devices. I know the medical supply company I do work for we all use iphones. We have a lot of patented intellectual property that China constantly makes knock offs of. They're the masters of stealing trade secrets and technology. Since the phones are manufactured in China, they could demand a key inserted at the time of manufacture.

I'm surprised the Chinese government does not already have such access.

Again the bottom line is San Bernardino County messed up, the FBI seriously messed up. San Bernardino had invested in a program to be installed on all there phones that would have allowed them to access the phones. But the problem is the never installed it. The FBI messed up because they could have had the phone backed up to the iCloud. But no some idiot changed the password which totally prevented them from backing it up to the iCloud. The phone gives so many attempts before it is wiped totally clean and you will never be able to retrieve anything from it. The FBI used up just about all their chances. If they continue the phone will be wiped clean. So they want Apple to create a program where the phone will not recognize all the attempts to open it. There is well over a billion combinations. Once Apple creates that program (hopefully they will not) then the U.S. government will proceed to keep entering codes until it unlocks and all of the information will still be there. Also this will devalue the phone and the company. Which in turn will devalue employees stock options and 401k's.

...and your last point is exactly what the FBI is counting on turning popular opinion against Apple (ie the perception they are putting their business interest ahead of national security).

Not trying to bring politics into this only stating where i heard it but last night during the debate rubio said that it was only the one phone ? Not true i guess

Yup, one phone in this particular case... but the key Apple is asked to create for the "one phone" will open any phone. So that argument doesn't really make sense. (And several other authorities have already chimed in stating that they'd like to use it for other phones (in some cases hundreds of phones) in non-terror related cases).

MaddMaxx MaddMaxx No court is going to make Apple create something that will damage their business. No Court and several legal minds have already stated that. Especially after any court that can look pass the fact that 2 Muslims are involved and not be bias because of it. The court if they follow the law and consider the facts that the FBI was totally negligent in how they handled the phone in the first place. But Again I don't think any court can make any company create something that will destroy a company. The iPhone is a big part of Apple. Also Tim Cook has also said there is no way that program would only work for that 1 phone.

This is true smitty, Apple would have to agree to do so, no court going to be able to make them.

I will say 1 more thing. If the ruling went against Apple in anyway. Then it will further explain how much of a farce the american judicial process is. It will serve as another example how people can just leave their home and kill someone for no reason and only get 20 years.
