I run the Penguin 350 with 2 "Super Cartridge"s on the rear side for uber bio and mechanical filtration.

The maintainence is nill. Just like my ammo and nit levels. And it looks worlds better on the backside of my tank. As well as inside my tank. Marineland's wide odd shapped lower intake and midlevel intake don't let anything by and look worlds better in my opinion.

i have 2 penguin 350s on my 75 gal and a emporer 280 on my 29 gal and couldnt be happier. water stays crystal clear and ammo and nit levels are always zero even with a heavy fish load. the filter cartridges can get a little expensive so instead of throwing them out after one use i keep 2 or 3 spares and take the dirty ones outside and clean them with a strong spray from the garden hose. they can be cleaned and reused several times before needing to be thrown out

Aquaclears ! I have 2 Emp. 400's in the garage unused. Ran them for a few months and they did fine. Just went back to my old stand by Aquaclears.
I run 4 AQ 70's, and 2 Rena XP2's on my 125g.
More media options with the AQ's, and better surface agitation than the 2 Emps.
Just my $.02
To each his own.

Aquaclear parts are also more easily found since most LFS stock the parts.

same with marine land parts they sell them every where...

aqua clear all the way man, hand's down for hang on back filtration.... :grinyes: :D

media media media media .............................. :D

I would go with the Aquaclear when the sponge needs cleaned just rinse it out. I really don't like my emperors I ended up changing the filter pads every 2 weeks at $2.75/ filter.

I run an emp 400 and an aq500 on my 125 the aq500 is way easier to clean and maintain not to mention start back up after cleaning... okay well I mentioned it! :grinno:

One advantage of the Emp.'s is the flexible plastic it's made of, the hard plastic of the AC's can break much easier due to being brittle...I do think the AC are a much better mechincal filter, but not certain about bio....
