i'd like to hear from people that have or had these filters, and what they think of them for aquariums.

how do you have them set up?

are you running any other filtration with them?

how good do they handle mech filtration?

are they noisy?

what are some pros and cons?

i'll be moving soon and am looking for some filter ideas for a large (500 - 1,000 gal) aquarium that i plan to have custom built in the new house. any input is appreciated, thanks!

There are quite a few members that have them. I can't recall a single complaint. I want one, but don't really have anything to put it on.

my boyfriend and i have one and if u click the link you can see how its setup. Its pretty much the only bio i have but i have 4 filter socks in front of it so that takes care of the mechanical. The pump is louder than the ultima, but you can hear the media inside spinning around hitting each other. Its not loud and if u had in under a stand with sides and doors, i doubt youd hear it at all. I dont really have a con at all on it.

that tank's a stunner! thanks. how often do you backwash the ultima and do you see a lot of dirt coming out of it?

also, does anyone run only an ultima? i want to avoid the noise from an overflow if possible but i have doubts about the quality of the ultima's mechanical filtration.

we have honestly backwashed the thing 1 time. I dont really recall seeing any dirt in there at all. The filter socks must be doing a hell of a job. I used to have noise from my overflow but since i reworked the plumbing on it, i no longer hear any water. I now only hear the return pump spinning and the beads inside the ultima. This is with 3600 gph flow as well.

my intentions were to avoid having a sump by using only an ultima ii, but i'm not sure if thats a good idea. if i need a sump anyway, i'm probably not going to get an ultima.

how loud are the beads? are they distracting at all when talking, reading or watching tv or anything like that?

So is it loud then?

no it is not loud at all. id say its as loud as if you had an airstone in your tank and u could hear the bubbles breaking the surface, and thats not loud at all. Id say that if you had a stand that was closed off ( walls and door) that you would not hear it at all. let me see if i can get a good video for u.

that would be cool.Even a short video would better than none
My concern would be how noisey it would be in a living room next to the tv etc.
