AQUA Ultima II Filter Reviews

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you the man, sponger!!

p.s. - if anyone knows anyone else with an ultima ii, i'd appreciate it if you could forward this thread to them. thanks in advance!

The videos make the noise sound 100 times louder than it really it. we have a couple air stones in the tank and the bubbles are the loudest thing, and it's not even that loud. there is a slight humming coming from the pump..but it is tolerable. like sponger said, we fixed the pipes in the overflow so that there is no sucking noise and u can not hear the water flowing into the overflow. It's wonderful! the sump we switched to is very small compared to the one we had before, and it was cheap, actually got it at lowes. but like i stated earlier, we have no complaints!

Geo Queen is correct. You need some kind of mechanical filter with the Ultima. The media is not designed to trap particles. When I install it in koi ponds we pull prefiltered the water from a settlement chamber. Many members use the Ultima..most with filter sock in a sump. Here's a new Ultima II 4000 I got for a member which is loaded with 3 cuft of media. You will hear the beads...more so if you run a bigger pump.

For my tank, I built me own bead filter with sinking media and heavier chamber which eliminates the noise.

spiff is running two Ultima IIs. He initially had a sump, but replaced it with the Ultimas.

A. IMPORTZ also uses an Ultima on his 900 gallon tank

Great thread!

It seems we share the same tastes in equipment. I'm running my Ultima with a Reeflo too (Champion Primer in my case). The automatic backwash jets are incredibly convenient!

You'll love the Ultimas! I wouldn't go with anything else! They're just so simple and effective. Everything seems so much easier!

The green canister above the Ultima is a filter sock.

he calls it an "LFI sock filter". where would i be able to find some info on that (couldn't find anything on google)?

i'd like to know how it works. something like that hooked up to a sand filter full of matrix might be the way i go. now my wheels are turning!

thanks for bringing that to my attention!

pacu mom, thank you for the awesome links! a. importz was/is only running 2 ultimas without any extra mech and he said;

sounds like they do an ok job at mech but not great. i never heard of these closed filter socks before but it sounds like they would be the perfect solution to the lack of mechanical filtration. i'm intrigued!

I'm going to be running two Ultima 4000s strictly for biological filtration, and plan on using four large spa filters for mechanical filtration. Since my new tank has 8' of external overflow boxes, I have to use a holding sump. One of my Ultimas will be drawing from the sump and returning the water to the main tank. The other Ultima and the spa filters will be drawing from the main tank. Will have some filter socks in the holding sump, but plan of having the main mechanical filtration done with the spa filters. Will have four 1 1/2" pipes just off the floor to suck up feces and debris off the bare floor. With two more traditional uptakes placed in the upper third of the tank, I anticipate my spa filters run by two Hammerhead pumps to provide some extreme mechanical filtration.

Here's my setup.

I JUST CRAPPED IN MY PANTS!!! how many gallons is that tank pacu mom? i love it! i'm subscribed- http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299810

does anyone see anything wrong with filling an ultima ii or a sand filter with matrix, if i put a sock filter (like spiff did) in front of it to catch the dirt??

or something like this

...maybe i should start a new thread about this idea.
