Why dont u just buy new media its not too expensive at least add some filter floss.

Tbh a sump would be better. Yes if only you know that their aquarium had no issues such as bacterial,fungal or parasites. Tbh wouldn't use the media if the canister filter came from someone I didn't know.

My sump is a rubbermaid tote. Most use aquarium's. Can't give you a price because it depends on how simple or complex the sump is.

What is filter floss?

The foam stuff like in a hob filter they make just the pad for canisters u can reuse some for awhile also if u clean with fish tank water.
