Aquaclear 70 vs Seachem Tidal 75

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of filters claim to have flow control valves, but its just patially shutting the flow of water, not the pump speed and if run long term under restriction can cause other problems.

IMO GO AQUACLEAR< HERES why, 1 u cannot lower the tank level if you want aquaterrarium or Paludarium with the Tidal. Two smaller capacity Volume wise. Three you cannot extend the siphon tube without Modifying the intake on tidal, easily DONE with aquaclear have extension tubes available. Four, U get biomedia and carbon with aquaclear purchase only matrix with tidal. Five , Grinding noise on Tidals if water level drops. The only thing tidal has is automactically restars BUT I HAVE HAD 110 and 70 for 20 plus years I NEVER HAD RESTARTING PROBLEM AS SOME STATE. Good luck.

Just to add…..In 25+ yrs I have only had a few of the smaller ACs not prime and fail starting when power goes out. AC 500s (110’s) and I have had 6-8 of them running 24/7 for over 20 yrs, never fail to restart and self prime. I also run extensions on intake tubes on all of them. Good luck with your decision.

Another vote for Aquaclear. I don't use a lot of HOB filters, largely because they don't pair up well with plywood tanks, but I recently picked up a couple of all-glass 70-gallon tanks and decided to un-mothball some old Aquaclear 500's, which appear to be identical to today's 110 model. Both of them had been in constant use for many years, although not the last 10. Took them out of storage, rinsed them off, plugged them in...bingo! Still perfect! Cut a couple pieces of Poret foam to fit and all good.

I don't know what amazes me more: the fact that they seem to last forever...or the fact that a design that has been on the market for something like 40 years is still a competitive choice. :)

Hey Everyone I appreciate everyones feedback. I ended up going with 2 tidal 75 on the 75 gallon tank mainly for curioisty since I have had Aquaclear before. I do have a 20 gallon quarantine/grow out tank in the stand which I have added a brand new aquaclear 30 on it. I wanted both just to see how it goes. As for fish Im still yet unsure, but I appreciate all the options some members here have posted. Im going to start cycling and hopefully in a few weeks I can get some fish.

Let us know how you like em

I swayed away from tidal because of the surface skimming feature which cannot be shut off

With floating food surface skimming is a nuisance
