Aquaclear 70 vs Seachem Tidal 75

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I been favoring the Seachem tidal, mainly because of the self priming feature, would be nice not to worry on vacation if power goes out.

I'm fairly certain I have an older Perfecto (now Marineland) 75 G tank, the lid lip on the trim is a bit wider.

I have my AC 70 in my 75 gal. tank. I cut a slot in the rim for the uplift intake. It is a small cut. But be sure of where you want to place them because cutting thr indent is a pita. I acually used a coping saw which lets one rotate the blade. I have since bought myself a Dermel tool and can cut a lot of stuff easier 😉 It is best to do this in an empty tank. If you cannot,

--> Get a shoes box sized Rubbermaid or similar box.
--> Lower the water level in the tank so the box can be moved in place to catch the plastic rim filings that sawing creates.
--> You can get clever and clamp it where you need it if you have no help. I did it alone. But for one filter only, so 1/2 the work you need to do.

I got my first Eheim canister so I could run pressurized CO2 thtough it. I was afraid of trying that with the other canister options of the day would likely break them. I think this was in early 2003. I ran that set-up for about 7 or 8 years before I repurposed the tank. The filter ran fine and quiety the whole time and It is still running that way but with no co2. I have 5 of them, but only 3 in continuous use. The 4th was/is for spare parts and the 5th is the bigger model which I never got around to hooking up. It's on the shelf- you cannot find one NIB today--> Pro 2 028.

I have never run the Tidal’s but have had an AC110 going for several years on my 75. It does it’s job well. I did have the replace the impeller and impeller shaft as it got worn down and was making a grinding noise. But it was a cheap fix and the filter has been dead silent ever since.

I appreciate all the info, thats exactly what im thinking of doing with the filters. Have one intake lower than the other to cover more of the tank space. I see you like the Eheim canisters, I never had them. Im trying to stay away from canister filters to make more room in the stand, but I used to have the fx5.I Wonder how they compare to fluval
If you decide to go canister, Eheim is the way to go.

Agree with the above.
What kind of freshwater species?
Sometimes amount of water movement/flow, is dictated by the species, and the habitat they have evolved to live in.

Did this question get answered? Strong water flow is not needed nor desirable for some species. I’ve run successfully with two AC 110s on a 75 and another 75 running with just two sponge filters.

Yes I answered it earlier, im not really entirely sure what species I will be rolling with still. The tidal filter has a flow setting so hopefully i can use that to accommodate whatever i decide.

The dilemma might be figuring out what species you actually want then, because that often determines the proper amount of flow needed.
Species like Angels, Discus, some Bettas, Severums and gouramis would prefer less water flow than some others, because they are adapted to oxbows, and slack water habitats, so would prefer a slow flow, maybe only 1 filter. Some like the Anabantoids and their relatives have evolved air breathing organs to supplement the lack of O2 in less oxygenated slow flow situations.
But
Species like many Geophagines, Tomocichla, certain barbs and Tiger fish live in riffles, counter currents, and even rapids, so a couple strong filters, and maybe even a power head may be required to add the extra O2 they need, and the flow helps temper aggression as the mature.
Some species get health problems as they age, if not given proper flow rates
For certain species grow out tanks, if I used HOBs at all, I would line the entire back of the tank with HOB filters.

For certain Bettas, and Killifish 1 filter turned on low speed was often enough.
