Hey guys my aquaclear recently started making a grinding noise. I took apart the motor area and cleaned it all out and its still doing it. I noticed that the impeller does not go as far into the motor as it used to and this seems to be causing the noise. Do you guys have any idea on how to fix it? I was thinking of getting a new impeller but wasn't sure if this would fix it. I really need to fix this ASAP as the tank is right by my bed and driving me NUTS!

It for sure isn't sand cause I cleaned it out super well and i've never even used sand with this filter. Its a planted tank with a soil type substrate haha

Sonds like the shaft is bent. Even a slight bent can cause bouncing and grinding noise. It's not easy to straighten it up and you may have to replace the motor.

Bent shaft or a worn impeller magnet. They get ground down over time if you use sand or have snails or other things that could get in the housing. Also, the plastic blade cap itself could break at the swing arm, causing it to shutter. If You can't get the impeller all the way down, it does sound like a bent shaft, thereby causing the chatter.

Replace the impeller or both impeller and motor. My ac 110 did that till I swaped the motor out for a new one.

True, the motor housing can be grinded out of whack too. I've seen it happen, but its less likely than the impeller itself being the problem. But if your going to replace the motor and the impeller, I think you're better off buying a whole new filter, no? Price wise I mean?

Yeah the magent was so worn down the impeller just sat on a tilt. It depends where you get the parts from i know peatland in the Bronx were I got my new motor from was pretty cheap. I paid around $14 for a new motor and impeller.
