Out Back In The Woods!
Can anyone point me in the right direction on which Plants to use in a DIY Aquaponics in my 55Gal Drow-out & my Soon the be finished 800Gal indoor pond.. Just like the looks of the plants and the added filtration of the aquaponics gonna use it in conjunction with my DIY Trickle Tower... on both tanks... Any info on which plants are the best and where to get them would really help... Plan on doing a Bell Siphon System in my DIY Aquaponics...

Looking for somthing that will help control high nitrates to go along with my weekly water changes as stated above like the looks of the plant but like to have that xtra Nitrate Filtration... due to workin outta town alot here lately... so what plants are sutiable for nitrate removable some one told me Water Sprite is the best followed by water lettuce then pothos what the real true best nitrate remover of the plant world?????

When you say Aquaponics this means terrestrial plants instead of aquatic plants to me.

Aquaponics also means edible plants to me... otherwise I would just use the term "terrestrial plant filtration"

For terrestrial plant filtration I would use Pothos.

For Aquaponics I would try Peppers, Lettuce, Strawberries, Mint and Tomatoes. Mint is the only one of these that I have tried and it grew quite well. I have seen posts from people that have been successful with the other edible plants mentioned.

Your correct I was refering to Plants for Nitrate Removal... didnt pay attenion when typing my mind just took over.. Im gonna try out some Pothos & some Arrow-Heads and see how that does still gonna do my weekly WC's but like the looks plus added Filtration.. plus the thought of growin edible food is as well a plus.. but lookin mostly for Nitrate Removal while outta town workin..

Any hard numbers on how much plant is needed for nitrate removal?

X2 ?????

Gonna pic up a 90L Container from walmart and stack as many of Pothos/Arrowheads in it with the Clay Balls using a Siphon System with a few small areation tubes to help oxygen reach the plants.. & see how that does in my tank...

Also being no mechinal Filtration for the plants should i let it return directly into the tank??? Or should I run it Back threw the Trickle Tower once filtered from the grow-bed???? For a final filtration or does it really matter???

I have seen some forum members with a single mile long Pothos vine. I have a half dozen potted pothos plants that I just trim the bottom foot off of and put over the edge of my tank. I think how ever many Pothos clippings you add they will grow to consume the available nitrates. The more you start off with the quicker you will get to that point. 4 clippings is a good start if you want someone to throw out a completely arbitrary number ;)

In the plant filtration thread someone suggested that Pothos like to have their roots in a stream of water. I have found this to be true. I wedge my foot long (I would say a minimum length of about 4" clippings would be good) Pothos clippings between the edge of my tank and a spray bar which does a nice job of keeping fresh water flowing over the roots.

I don't think the order of the filtration matters a whole lot with plants. I would try for "keep it simple".

I have never used entire plants... I have always just used clippings. I read somewhere that the type of roots the plants grow for soil are different than the type they grow in water. I have no clue to the truth of this statement though... so take it with a grain of salt.
