Aquaponics Filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thought this was interesting and figured i would share it with you guys... "According to Perdue University 2011 Edition Aquaponic/Hydroponics This is their update reccomindation on aquaponic/hydroponics"

Every 1 Gal = 1/2"-1' Sq Ft Grow Space
Every 1 LB Fish = 2 Gal Water
Every 1 Gal Water = 4 Plants Plus Bed Material Per Sq Ft

Im gonna try to follow these reccomendation but its gonna be hard to do with- (2)RTC, (2)TSN, (4)RTC X TSN, (2)Irwini, (1)Firewood hopefully, (2)ARTC, (1)Black Devil Cat.. got my work cut-out for me...

Their no way im gonna be able to house that many plants per pound of fish in my house in the living room... no do i have that much sq ft in my living so im gonna do a 1/2 of the reccomed step and see how that goes..

Instead of the clay grow media i was curious is i could use Seachems Matrix being i had some left over from my sump... moneys no issue just try to use what i got but if the clay media is better so be it...

It wont matter if you are Just growing pothos, arrows etc. show us some Pics!

Will post some this week when bigger pump comes in... Got the Grow Bed, Gravel media, and the arrowheads/Pothos cleaned and trimmed and set everything up installed all the plumbing took a T tied the grow bed return into the return from my Trickle Tower so more aeration... hooked it all up and could never get it to Siphon... (USING A BELL SIPHON) and could not get it to siphon so took it apart cared it outside and tried it with the WH and it siphoned so i changed the plumbing to a 90 Directly into the tank and same thing no siphon so i came to conclusion the pump was strong enoungh to push enough water over the overflow tube to cause a suction... hince need for bigger pump

why Not Just cut the length of Your tube, Or drill holes or slits in it?

I cut the overflow tube an 1" already was 4" now 3" and used thick grinding blad from a grinder to cut 4 slits in the bottom of the bell cap pipe for the water siphon to break when it sucks air went threw 4ft of pipe to try to make it work cant figure out what to do other than get a bigger pump got 1/2" Overflow with an 1 1/4 Bell with a 3" gravel gaurd... unless u got any susgestions... the pump i am using is a 175gph Powerhead installed a pipe in the outflow for a small xtra bio filter and using the smaller where it sucks air it now pushes water into the plant filter due to the pipe in the outflow of the pump where it would produce the bubble made it a small pump essientally that would pump water into my plant filter but it will only overflow the pipe and never creates a suction have a 90 out the bottome of the Bulkhead with another 90 to the tank but before had it hooked to a T on the retun line figured it was gettin air so it would siphon so went with the 90 and still wont siphon...

Do i need to cut slits in the overflow pipe is that what you mean by Drill holes or Slits in it?????

Yes! but Im still not understanding why You're not getting suction...Holes or slits are never a necessity with Your syphon. Once the water reaches the drain pipe level then Your pump is no longer needed. did You add extra gallons of water to the system to compensate for the growbed volume? how many times do you want the bed to fill and drain per hour?

I believed you just solved the problem.. I didnt add any xtra water to compensate for the amount that it takes to fill the grow bed.. so it was just cycling the tank water and that was it no xtra water as you stated to make it siphon.. as far as cycling not a set amount on times to circulate in the grow bed im just letting it cycles according to the pump

I stand corrected neither helped. I cut a slit in the overflow pipe and it is draining at the slit the water is not rising above the slit to create a suction... added more water hoping it would help suction but nothing... gave it an hour to fill up and not a single Siphon from it not sure what else to do but get a bigger pump.. its only a 2 gallon window plastic trough it shold have well filled up and siphon at least 1 time in an hour...
