at aquariums do they crop large rays tails? i was at sedd aqurium yesterday(a 7hr drive), the camera battery died so no pics:irked:...i saw many large rays, alot of leios and mm's and flowers...the biggest that i saw was a lei that was atlwast 30"+ across and the tail was only 4-6"...they had some others that were 30"+ and their tails were the same, though their claspers looked trimmed aswell and had some fresh cut marks or chew marks...yet the 2' flower i seen was fully tailed...all the fish were in to small of displays, could this tail "cropping" be from that?...all of the rays looked sickly except the big flower and a few 15" mm and leis...

I have never heard of anyone purposely cropping a stingrays tail. Though I have heard that especially wild rays will bite each others tails off if there were a lot of rays in the tank then I would suspect that that is what is happening. If there was one in there with a full tail then I would suspect too that, that particular ray is the culprit. The male rays can get aggressive and become quiet the biters.

in the tank with the big lei there were like 5-8 rays, including the full tailed flower...all the other rays were smaller in the tank except one in the back was very large but i couldn't see the tail...the big lei was the only cropped tail in that tank...there were a few that were pushin 30" in a diff tank together and they all had cropped tails...i didn't even see them till one scared the sh^t out of me...they were laying against the glass and the angle made a glare the blocked them out...i was looking at the back of the display to see if they had any rays in that tank and my face was close to the glass...then it shott up right in front of me...it was a beast!!! there were tidle waves crashing in the tank when it was at the surface...

also the tails looked like a dogs tail after it has been cropped nice clean cuts...no chunks missing

Maybe the gal that works at Shedd can enlighten us..... ;)

I'd guess either damage in shipping or other rays. Doesn't make too much sense for an aquarium to crop ray's tails.....

I would agree with DB, If WC they seem to come in with damaged tails much more ofter from shipping/packing,
capturing or in overcrowded holding facilities where they are underfed then tail biting occurs.
