No offence, I honestly got confused. I thought you meant something like a lei bit off part of the ray's tail or something.

none taken...i went back to see what i put and was like what the hell?...i did just get back a few min before the post from chicago...that was 7hr drive through snow on no sleep for 2 days...

they did have a 2' jar tring to lay the beat down on some MASSIVE aussi lungs though...it was funny...i thought the lung was going to eat it to make it stop...

Shedd, nor any aquarium that I know of will ever crop a tail.

I've seen Shedd's collection in person several times in person, and never noticed anything abnormal about them. There are lots of pics on MFK from the Stingray Symposium they hosted.
One thing I could think of is that "short" tails might be in comparison to some of the animals produced for the pet trade vs the look of some of the animals that are kept more 'pure' or 'natural' when it comes to genetics.

they had a few like your second pic, but that was not what i was refuring to...idk if they just got these or what...there was 2 very large rays before the pimas that had no tail...like claspers + 1"...then the leo big leo i saw was in their first tank of rays and its tail was way short aswell... ex. take your first pic...the 4 spots equaly spaced on the tail...go to the second dot from the back of the ray then no more tail...

i edited one of my own ray pics to show more what i mean...no stinger or anything...

the one u saw was prob the ceja ray. they have very small tails.

no this was a leopldi...30"+ black with white dots...the other 2 i never saw their tops just there bellies...nub tail with no stinger, as the shortness of the tail was past the stinger...also the tail didn't slim down like it should have even with shorter tails they still slim down...this tail nub was as big around as a bottle of water at the end...

All of the P leopoldi at Shedd have full tails, so I am not sure what you are referring to. The only rays that are 'stumpy' are our 3 Ceja Rays, Paratrygon aiereba. They were like that when we acquired them, and they often loose their tails because they are so thin. Perhaps you thought it was another species since there is a female pearl ray in the same exhibit with them and I'm guessing you might not have seen the top of their disc since they love to stick themselves to the glass. The males claspers are also a bit raw right now. That is from a bit of 'overuse 'as we recently had a birth and the males have been very interested in mom since.

Hope that helps.
