That's what wormeries do to you, and the wormier they are the warmer and gooeyer you feel, lol.

Yeah, that sounds...ummm...great?

Lol. Yes, I know, that's why I advised Nik that UK and Canuckistan wormeries pose different challenges. If she goes down the great and fascinating wormery wormhole (see what I did there, lol) then she'll no doubt face some rather annoying, and probably persistent setbacks.

As she settles in to her new home and her garden begins to takes shape I think she'll realise that something is missing. She won't be able to put her finger on it at first, it'll puzzle her, keep her awake at night, and then she'll remember old Esox sage advice....a wormery, that's what I need, and she'll feel all warm and gooey at the thought, lol.

I’m am definitely thinking about starting one next yearwas hoping to use the current black bin on my parking pad out back but now am doubting that bc of your suggestion to put it right on the ground, which makes perfect sense.

I’m pretty sure the only critters I have to worry about are local cats, dogs, ravens, magpies, and coyotes. I’m sure there are bears near by as we are further into the “country” than we were when we were in the big city but I can’t see a bear making its way to my wormery.

if I choose to put it in my garden (which is totally fenced) I might put it right in the corner under my apple tree. It will be out of the way and very shaded.

as for jjohnwm’s inquiry about local worms I know there are night crawlers but I’m not sure of the other types of worms.
I did a quick Google search and found this

I've had several wormeries over the years, both types too, open bottom and enclosed types as you were planning. The problem I had with enclosed ones (with a base) is that unless you have it perforated then rainwater builds up, and in some cases drowns all your worms!!!

So the sensible thing to do is perforate the base for drainage, yes? But then your worms can escape down, and come back up through the holes!! So basically you end up with a wormery that's no different from a bottomless one, lol.

That's why I always do bottomless ones now so you have plenty of drainage. Yes, worms can escape down, but they will only vanish if you don't feed them. Keep that garden waste and those kitchen scraps flowing and trust me, your worms will never leave, instead they will breed like crazy.

I’m pretty sure the only critters I have to worry about are local cats, dogs, ravens, magpies, and coyotes.

If you just feed plant based greenery I think that will help keep the predator type critters away who are after protein, scrap bones and such. But if you have a good fence that will also help too. I think you'll be ok.

Very nice thread!
My plants (sundews) will probably burn from the nitrates in aquarium water. I did an aquaponic project for a science expo years ago (2015 I think!) which was cool.

Very nice Nik, but come on, I thought we were professionals here. What we like to see are colour co-ordinated plant pots and drip trays! Lol.

This is my latest acquisition I bought at the weekend. It's strange elongate glossy leaves just jumped out at me as soon as I saw it....any guesses Fishman Dave Fishman Dave ?

I've had a reawakening in the world of houseplants
I contacted my plant-nerd Uncle, and he has enlightened me on proper substrates for things like airoids.
Now, my house is covered in house plants!

I don't know what's more addictive, damn house plants or fish. At least house plants don't leave you with a big electricity bill, lol.

I’m still fairly new at houseplants so unless I own it I probably am not privy to the name ? I would maybe try looking for similar plants under Chinese ever green or calathea (though I’m sure I am wrong).

there is no organization in my house just chaos. I have some plant pots but not many, I have stolen my cats scratch post, a tv diner tray, any hook I’m the ceiling now has a plant haha

these are my others, though be it not all of them as I’m still renting my old place that has approximately 10-15 plants left over there!

both fish and houseplants are quite addictive ?

Very good Nik, I am impressed. It is indeed a calathea. I'm rubbish at identifying plants, i have to keep the little tags when I buy them so I can remember what they are, lol.
