Aquariums and gardening.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
None of my plants get fresh tap water. I have loads of tubs of old aquarium water from water changes. I also squeeze the gunk out of my filter floss/sponges into the water too. It's full of nutrient, maybe too much nutrient for my calathea?

Time will tell now. I'm glad you guys have given me the heads up on its fragility anyway.
I’m sure you will do fine!!! Keep us posted

You can tell when a new addiction takes over when you go to the garden centre (which also houses my LFS), and don't even bother going into the fish bit, instead I steamrollered right into the houseplants section, lol.

I bought this bad boy, cute as a button, I fell in love with the cute little critter as soon as I saw it. It's a Livistona Rotundifolia palm. I drove home as fast as I could to research my new purchase only to discover that this thing can grow twice as big as my house!!!!! Lol.

And it's not like some spotty little inexperienced store guy sold it me, as happens often in the fish dept, no, this one's all my own doing. Lol. What a buffoon!

And I thought my indoor banana was taking over, what have I done, lol. My only hope is that plants are like most fish......and become stunted in cramped areas, lol.

Do your research kids, lol.

This is not exactly gardening per say….but it does go along with my tropical house plants

my second favourite room (first is my fish room) in the house.

I put this monstera outside this summer and she like my paradise burnt her leaves in the sun. I trimmed most of the damaged leaves and she has started to come
Back nicely. Maybe next year she will look much better!

I would love for this room to be a tropical jungle spa room

That looks idyllic Nik. The best part, although you need lots lots more, are the candles! I love scented candles, they really allow me to get in touch with my feminine side! I very very rarely have baths, i'm a shower guy, but on the rare occasions I do have a bath, I always set the ambience with lots of candles. And don't forget a nice glass of wine too.

That cheese plant looks a lot healthier too, now those brown leaves have gone.

And don't spend too long in the bath, I find that my bits get terribly wrinkly! Lol.

Thanks, this is definitely my house project room!
I have a peace Lilly that has met the same summertime fate and it is not recovering quite as well, but I am hoping I can put it over in the other corner for it to grow.

i need low light large plants for this space as it’s got a small window and no other source of natural lighting.

I absolutely despise showers…when I was a renter I would not rent any location that didn’t have a bath tub ?

I'd love to point you in the right direction regarding low light loving plants but i'm still very much finding my feet in this greenery game, lol.

Plants are definitely like fish in as much that they all prefer different parameters, it's a minefield. Thank god for the internet and you tube, where you can get some really good pointers.

Omg yes! I have struggled with some very common plants yet some have thrived with me haha ones that are “difficult”

my treubii moonlights and dark form I imported are apparently hard to acclimate but mine did fantastic!!! My ivy all died
Go figure

Your Swiss cheese plant is a good choice for a shady bathroom, your pothos would do well there too but if you want something really big, giant philodendron.
Oooo I like that suggestion! I’m definitely going to try to find one

I have been leaving the lights on in the day time…I’m not sure the way will even do much for the plants

I'll tell you guys what gets me, time and again. You go to your garden centre and the plants are absolutely thriving. They look so healthy. And then when you get them home, within a couple of weeks it usually all starts going wrong, not everytime, but enough to make it annoying, and very puzzling at the same time.

My houseplants section in my garden centre is very warm and humid. The plants, some of them quite big, are all close together, and it is literally like walking through a jungle. All you need to finish the effect are some hidden speakers with howler monkeys and parrots sound effects.

And yet, get this, the succulent section is in the same humid room, and some of those cacti are stunning. I don't know how they can get cacti, which are supposedly arid and dry air loving plants to thrive in the jungle atmosphere. Go figure.

They have created one type of atmosphere (humid) in one big room, where ALL their houseplants are. But they have a broad range of plants, yet they all look beautiful!!! I don't know how they do it.
