Aquatic lizard for a 60 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Chinese alligator lizards are available in the pet trade only as cbusa which there are some floating around from time to time. Your best bet would be a crocodile skink, they are semiaquatic and would do well in a 60 gallon.

Chinese water dragons are pretty cool and should be fine in a tank of that size.

Speak of the Devil, there are some Chinese alli lizards on Kingsnake right now...450.00...

A 3 foot lizard in a 60 gallon tank? I think you should re think that if youre advising this to be a permanent home for a water dragon. Maybe as a grow out, thats about as far it could be of use. The tank that is.

I think there is a Mexican species that's either similar to/related to the Chinese alli. I want to say they're Xenosaurus sp. but can't swear to it.

It's slim pickings though...you'll find the vast majority of available semi-aquatic lizards are much too large for that tank, from the Asian, Aussie, and sailfin water dragons to caiman lizards to Nile and water monitors...to marine iguanas :)

^^ I agree, WDs are the ID shark of the reptile world. They need tons of space. I've seen far too many with their noses and jaws rubbed to the bone...

chinese water dragons requirements are heavily exaggerated imo. it is not a bulky monitor. its a 1 foot long lizard with a 2 foot long tail. not all of them are flighty either...

They can actually get very bulky (I had and seen several males that were huge), they are very active and they will use all space you will give to them. In my humble opinion if you trully want to give them a space in which you can observe them in near nature like behaviors, a small wardrobe size enclosure (which can be made out of a small old wardrobe) is needed at least. Natural plants can be used and a big water feacture fits nicelly.
